Boosting cable signals

Someone I know has a disconnected analogue cable - however she is able to get a weak RAI Uno signal - is there any way she can boost the signal? The cable operator (NTL) say they can't connect her as they don't serve her street.

Surely its just a matter of getting a wideband (VHF and UHF) booster (preferably with variable gain) although its not guranteed to work

Although the only guranteed way would be to forget NTL and go for an FTV system pointed at Hotbird where she can enjoy RAI 1 2 and 3 along with Berluisconi's channels (God help us) Reta 4 Canale 5 and Italia 1 (frequencies etc on SatcoDX)
