Analogue Camcorder to PC

    Hi,
I am looking for some basic information regarding transferring video from an analogue camcorder to a PC. I would have thought this type of question would have been answered here before but I searched and went thorugh each post and can't find exactly what I'm looking for. So at the risk of a 'RTFx' type reply here it goes:

    1. What is the 'normal' way to transfer video from an analogue camcorder to a PC?

    2. What type of hardware is needed PC-wise?

    3. Does the camcorder need to have a certain type of adaptor or port?

    4. Are there any problems to be aware of when doing this regarding standards and such?

    Any help would be appreciated.

BTW: It's not my camcorder. I only have the brand name for it - it's a 3 year old Smasung. I'll try and get more exact details later off the fella that I'm posting this for.

you can buy an analogue video capture card in most computer stores. instead of firewire it just has an analogue input. they are fairly cheap and most come with a bit of basic software. they are quite easy to get the hang of. also if you have a digital camcorder with an analogue input you could transfer to the digital camcorder first and then to the pc through firewire. pinnacle do a capture box with digital and analogue connections with the pinnacle studio 5 software (or what ever the latest one is) only thing is pinnacle are really good so it will be quite expensive

All the Pinnacle cards come with Studio 9 or Liquid Edition, which you may not necessarily want. You might want to look into a cheap TV card with composite/S-Video input. S-video gives a better quality picture.
Otherwise, a USB cable with analogue inputs, such as the Dazzle DVC80 would do the trick, but this is also bundled with (a lite version of ) Studio.

As regards standards, anyhting you buy in Europe will be PAL (normally PAL/NTSC/SECAM multistandard), so no worries there. Pretty much all camcorders will have analogue outputs, usually in the form of a jack-sized port, and you'll then need an analogue cable if one is not supplied with the camera.
