Recent PC Game "Must Haves"

Hi all.

Im going to get a load of recent games for the PC.

I love First Person Shooter games, so suggestions welcome.

What do ye think the most "must have" games are? (recent - 1year old)

I just want a few opinions before i get the games. Give reasons for your suggestions.

All opinions welcome.

Far Cry - the game that's drawing me back into the fps genre.
other than that, there's been sweet **** all singleplayer fps's worth playing recently. (cod was fun for a while)

Max Payne 2 - short but oh so sweet!
pure cinematic secks from beginning to end.

Knights of the Old Republic - great game, and i'm not even an rpg fan.

Need for speed underground - seriously lacking in many areas, i gave up 72 races into it:( great fun while it lasts

UT2004. Haven't had this much fun with an FPS game in a long time.
Max Payne 2 is great while it lasts too. (seems to be a love it or hate it game though)

In my opinion:

Call of Duty - excellent! (kicks MOH ass)
Far Cry - excellent, judging from the demo.
Max Payne - again judging from demo its ace.
UT 2004 - demo again classic.
XIII - original and fun.
Armed and Dangerous - a laugh throughout with original arsenal.
Halo - completed it on XBOX twice, much the same.
Deus Ex - Invisible War - class

These are just a few...........

As far as pc games go, though, try:

Call of duty
Max payne 2
Far cry
Battlefield 1942/vietnam

With a decent gfx card and reasonable PC:

Far Cry - It's just so damn pretty
Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow - All the wonderful shadow sneaking, and multiplayer
Deus Ex Invisible war - Cracking story, can run like a pig on some pcs though.
Call of Duty - Excellent wartime fun
Unreal Tourney 2k4 - Only if you play online, fast and furious.
Max Payne 2 - One of the best story driven games I've ever played

And of course GTA Vice City if you don't have it yet (is that less than a year old?)

Vietcong (not new but i still lurv, play it religiously)

to name a few

But definately give UT2K4 a lash, havn't had this much fun in a FPS for a while.

UT is a no no for me im afraid. I have no network connection or broadband.
Ah well. Any other suggestions people? But the demo still rocks - excellent.

RTS games are a no no also - they never appealed to me im afraid, like eating fish. Blah!

I have a problem with my Vietcong.

All the people in the game morph into rat like yokes (great description) they sill shoot at me and i cant kill them. Major glitch. I may get the patch when I get the chance. that will sort it.

Anyone suggest any others (not the above). No RTS please. My PC is pretty top notch but the Far Cry demo was a bit jumpy. I heard somewhere that the full version runs a bit smoother. Has anyne experienced this?

I couldn't run the demo at all (it was about 3 frames a second!). Full game ran fine.

jebus, thats weird. At least full game works. The demo made my mouth water. Drooool.

Loobz: Sounds like you have the character detail down to lowest setting. Try to tweak everything up to it's highest setting through the setup window you get when starting the game (set it to use graphics card memory if you have a good one too - 128MB up) and the in game setup as well. But ofcourse put the quality down a bit if it starts to become unplayable, it's quite the CPU hog unfortunately.

Also the add-on pack Fist Alpha gives you a whole new one player game with more weapons n stuff.

Latest patch for Vietcong is 1.6 and you can get at the Pterodon site

Edit: hmm...it's 42MB, so maybe no use to ya if yer dial up

You didn't miss anything. The end is pure crap.
112 races for a 5 second cut scene.

I've gotten to the 3rd/2nd last race but its just a bastard.

I quite liked the Drag races though, its rare to see a little something different from EA.

loved the sidways action of the drifts myself.
they're the only events that i can easily win on hard mode:)
i know 2 other people that got stuck on the same race as me, fecking endurance bollix!:mad:

as much as i hate EA, nfsu is one of my favourite racing games of recent years

I have a problem with vietcong too, well more accurately, with vietcong:fist alpha. I cant finish the first damn mission!!! Sorry to go off topic but does anyone know how to finish it? whenever i get within sniffing distance of the pow he gets killed, no matter whether i sneak up to him, or go in blasting, he ALWAYS gets killed and game over

Max payne 2 is the best single player game here. it has an amazing story. KOTR is also great. try Painkiller for some old school shooter action.

Yes indeed.
Max Payne 2 is one of the only games in recent memory that I've played more than once(to see the alternate ending)
also because it's so short...
and Ut2004 is a good investment too
