    They are not legal here.

Only Illegal as you want it to be. In my opinion, if you want to carry one keep it to yourself and if you do happen to use it, make sure it falls into the liffey afterwards.

if some gjuy comes to rob ur fone and u fry the ****ers skull he is probbley not going to go to the cops "er emm.... i was trying to rob this guy and then he stuned me...."

I used to work in a night club where one of the bouncers once used one when outnumbered 2/3 to one in a fracas that broke out. The next night the cops came in, took all our names and addresses and searched the entire building for the stun gun. They never found one but they obviously take it very seriously because there was about 15/20 of them involved in the search...

Always wanted a stun gun as a kid. There's instructions out on the web on how to make your own one, but I wouldn't advise it!!!!!!!

i'd love to have one just to mess with!!

And that's exactly why they're illegal. Weapons are not toys to be played with and a stun gun most certainly qualifies as a weapon.

I can imagine myselft with a stun gun.

Come here little Kitty, come on.... this won't hurt a bit.

I think you'll find he will. Putting a stun gun to a person's head is a sick and viscious retaliation to an attempt to have your phone stolen.

A friend has one and it's scary even being in the same room as it when it's turned on. His was a souvenir that his brother bought, and hangs in his room without batteries in it.

Have to disagree with a poster above. Someone tries to take your property, phone etc... then you have every right to give em a blast of a stun gun. It won't kill them and will make them think twice. Obviously you don't want to have to do it, but if you are put in that situation, then well, thats unlucky for the punk involved, you reap what you sow, don't want trouble, don't go looking for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,366 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Unfortunately that's not the law's opinion of them Quigs. Personally I believe you'd be well within your rights to use pepper spray on a mugger. Unfortunately, the muggers would definitely see the advantage to the stuff too. I assume that's why it's illegal in this country...

No you don't. That's why they're illegal. You could lump him over the head with a rock too, that wouldn't kill him.

Er, it might actually... and it is 'Assault and Battery', - therefore also quite illegal.

OK so if it is sick and viscious to put a stun gun to someones head in self defence then what is it to try to mug someone?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 771 ✭✭✭Verdammt

I bought a Black Widow Diablo catapult in a shop in Dublin about 10 years ago and it's fu*king leathal. I'm not saying that it can be carried around town, but it can be fired similar to a gun and can kill from a good distance in the right hands.

Being mugged by someone may be 'sick and vicious' but that doesn't justify the possibly lethal retaliation of electrocuting them in the head.

It doesn't make any difference, what you're talking about it against the law. And its as bad if not worse than mugging somebody. Taking something like stungun to a person's head is grossly irresponsible and far sicker than stealing a phone. Both are illegal and one does not justify the other.

I know lumping someone with a rock is illegal, I was likening it to using the stun gun, I wasn't very clear about it though.

Dumb move. It's one thing to get caught in posession of an illegal firearm (yes, stun guns are classed as firearms) it's quite another to get caught importing one into the state. You'll probably end up with a criminal record over this.

Seeing as you've been caught importing a firearm, you're not really in the best position to give advice regarding this. Pepper spray is ILLEGAL to posess in ireland, never mind using it on someone or importing it. It is illegal under the 1925 Firearms act which specifically prohibits weapons which discharge noxious liquids or gases.

    Gee, I wonder why.

Anyone who has one of these deserves to use it at least once. On themselves, preferably.

    They are weapons.
    They are illegal.
They should most certainly remain banned in this country.

I also purchased a stun gun from the States off eBay at Christmas for my sister. She recently moved to a dodgy area and didnt really feel safe coming home at night.

I had thought about the legality of it and even had a look around the Irish interweb and didnt find anything so I didnt really take it too seriously.

I honesly had no idea it was classed as a firearm and if I had I wouldnt have bought it.

But she feels safer now and I feel slightly more at ease so I dont really see the harm :dunno:

    check out:
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/front.html

Gives all Irish legislation up until 2002. Anyone who wants info on the legality of various weapons should try searching the legislation for terms such as "air rifle", "stun gun", "crossbow" and so on.

Did they find anything interesting in the search ?
Why did get one? Protection or fun ?

Didn't get it for protection of anything.
don't know why I got it being honest, I don't think I'd even be able to use it on anyone. I'm not like that
They found nothing in the search, appart from some dirty boxers :p

I went to berlin last august came across a gun shop, bought a telescopic baton, stun gun, tazer, pepper spray and a good sling shot. Naturally the return trip via stansted got me caught, well arrived at dublin stopped by customs, asked where i had been, why, and what i was doing with the weapons. I pulled the i didnt know they were illegal line, didnt go down well, ended up with a fine as i was a minor. didnt get the house searched though.

Legal or not, doesn't matter when it comes to defending yourself. I was burgled at knife point once. Nowadays, have a perfectly legal and licensed firearm. The next scumbag I catch coming through the door, will be made replace everything, clean up and then perhaps do a spot of light housework, maybe get them to dig the garden, do the hoovering, perhaps hang a few pictures for me whilst the police are on the way. Or get shot in the knees. I'm not a complete animal, I would leave the choice with them. I would hate to have to do it, but I would not hesitate for a second either. These people rarely if ever will show you the same mercy.

Its different pontificating on high when you haven't been through it before. Personally movies like Bowling for Columbine made me sick with wackos like Charlton Heston and his attitude on right to bear arms etc... I don't like guns or any form of weapon, in fact I hate them, and I hate the fact that I feel compelled to be armed to the teeth, but I tell you what I don't like knackers in my house at 5am holding knifes to my loved ones and making off with the fruits of a lifetimes hard work and me helpless to do anything about it either (I can assure you there is no more desperate feeling in the world, 4 masked armed scumbags, and you are armed only with your beergut and underpants). Sometimes you have to even the odds. I chose to do it the legal way. I wouldn't bother importing illegal arms. (Of course, I also invested in good security systems, moved house etc..., don't want to be put in the position, if only because I know what I will do if I am in that position again, and I don't want to have to do it)

you are not legally entitled to use a firearm in self defence. if you threaten or shoot an attacker you will be prosecuted (and believe me they will report it to the Gardai), and it's also fairly likely that you will be hit with a civil case afterwards.

You don't mention what type of firearm you own (rifle / shotgun / air rifle) , but have you considered the risks of firing a gun within a house. For example, the risk to your family if a bullet / shot passes through a partition wall into your child's bedroom. Check out the tactical shotguns forum on http://www.shotgunworld.com for info on this.

Also, if you point a firearm at someone, you better be prepared to use it without hesitation.
anyone remember the case a couple of years ago when a pub owner challenged burglers with a .22 rifle. They took the rifle from him and shot him in the stomach.

I am also a licensed gun owner, and you are exactly the type of person I do not want to own firearms.
I understand the frustration of not being able to protect your family / possessions from intruders, but in my opinion using a firearm (outside of a life/death situation)is not an option.

knowing that your dvd and tv are ok is no comfort when you are sitting in a prison serving a long sentence for manslaughter.

I am well aware of the legalities and ballistics involved and I agree with you fiacha. But, this was life or death. I would rather do the time for removing them from the gene pool, then them doing the time for doing the same to one of my own. They had hurleys and a large knife to a loved one, and their getaway car wouldn't start, there was lots of screaming and shouting, anything could have happened, they could have killed us all, I didn't care about any of the stuff they took. In that situation you have got to assume that they are willing to use it. I don't intend being in that situation again and hoping that they just go away without hurting anyone. You would understand if it happened to you (note, I hope you never do truly understand, I wouldn't wish it on anyone, paranoia levels a couple of years on are still high, a slight noise and you are locked and loaded).

Apart from that I am a responsible firearms owner, member of a gunclub etc.. (I own a .22), I only do target shooting though, no game shooting, not into killing animals etc..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

They had hurleys and a large knife to a loved one

So taking a gun out would really help the situation? Lucky they didn't panic and use the knife. Then it could have been a lost loved one and a manslaughter sentence.

I think he means that if someone broke in they'd find him standing in the hall way with a gun pointed at them, and obviously get out. He's hardly gonna try and pull a gun with a knife at his throat is he?

Get off your high horse and place yourself in his situation.

FYI, you can buy them on EBAY and they will ship to Ireland.

Not sure what'd happen to you if customs found it though...

I'm off my high horse. I see few excuses to use a gun in life, especially when it could inflame a situation.

How would you stop a few masked knife wielding scum so??

I semi agree.... but I'd be going nuts with a baseball bat myself.
On that note - I'm moving into a new house soon, and I wish to purchase a baseball bat. Anyone know where I could get a decent one?

No buffybot you are right, there should never be a need to use a weapon. Sometimes you are forced into things though. You got it in one, that night a gun might well have made it worse. Now I am better prepared. I was in a rented house at the time, in my own house now.

An intruder would have little chance to put me in that situation. I have the best alarms I could get on all entry points, motion detectors in certain weak spots, hi powered motion detecting lighting all round the outside of the house, in addition, covert infrared CCTV at the main entry points hooked to TV in the living and bed room. Basically, next time I will know they are there. Rifle would be used as a tool to encourage them to leave (hopefully they don't have one too so it can become a question of who's got more bottle). I don't want to hurt anyone. But I will if it's them or me, or anyone belonging to me and damn the consequences. I will never allow what happened to me happen again.

Back to the point though stun guns, in the US many women carry 'tasers' in their handbags, these are really just low powered stun guns aren't they ? I think with any weapon the main risk is losing your bottle or losing your grip on it and having it used against you, so I am undecided on them to be honest. Plus being armed walking around, might do no more than give you a false sense of increased security, which might encourage you to be a bit more adventurous with the places you visit and might cause you to let your guard down in general. Which is not good.

If they are wielding a knife, let them have the TV etc. It isn't worth it, and is much easier to replace than a life.

Seems there are alot of these type of super sophisticated thief around these days. Not only will they 'av your TV, video, hi-fi and DVD player, they'll urinate, deficate on whatever they see fit and then give you a good stabbing to seal the deal. Gotta love the class.

If memory serves correctly, wasn't there a case recently of someone who's house was burgled only to return home after the event to find a steaming pile of burglar poo on their couch?

I can think of at least one other. In Cork city, a friends grandparents house was broken into some time ago and before the theives made off with some money and other bits & pieces, they relieved themselves on the furniture. Basically they destroyed anything they couldn't take with them.

(ohh and yes I've seen baseball bats for sale in sports shops in the city. Standard wooden ones and iirc, metal ones; possibly aluminium?)

Exactly... and let's face it, the possibility is quite high with the filth around nowadays. I'm sorry, but I'll be swinging with a bat, before I let them take stuff, including possibly, my life/fingers/girlfriends fingers or more?!?!
