No advertise, No selling in the store, No people talk about it
Why it seems no people're playing online games in ireland?
I've heard games like "Everquest" have been very popular in US and EU,but seems not the case.

Warcraft 3 is good on multiplayer - works perfectly well over a 56k modem too

might not be as big here as it is where you come from rainer but there it's still quite popular.

think CS is the most popular online game

People I know who are not even gamers have asked me about online gaming because it's being advertised. Never mind about the bloody games companies, bloody Eircom are advertising it!

As for no selling in stores, that’s untrue. I got the online only game SWG from a toy shop, World of Wonder, in Ballina. And along with them game retail stores and video stores are selling console hardware for online use and games with online play.

Can u play these online games anywhere or do u need the internet? Or is it only in the stores, tell me more.

There are pretty big unreal, wolfenstein and counter strike communities in ireland as far as i know. And there are definitely a fair few people playing starcraft and red alert 2. I'm guessing that not many people here play MMORPG's is because of the cost of internet connections in the past, I know when Everquest came out the only thing that stopped me from buying it was the prospect of €200 phone bills, well that and the loss of my social life.

    :D

How come every couple of weeks someone comes along asking " where are the online players in Ireland"...? No matter where you are, as long as you have a phone line you generally can play games online. Why people think its any different here I dont know?

No selling in stores... so you are telling us Game, Smyths, Gamestop etc boycott selling online games??

A better question would be: how did you come to those conclusions?

    Matt

    What is an internet?

Sorry to go off-topic but is there a freepost P.O. box number for sending messages to these boards. I have almost run out of stamps. Also, I appear to have lost my favorite pen.

    Yours etc.

there are very few gaming servers in ireland, alot of games dont even have an irish server, most Irish gamers can be found playing on english servers with no reference to being irish, but there is the odd Irish server here and there for counterstrike, battlefield etc.

During my stay in the USA Online gaming is was very popular, as with the MSN's and the AOL's. Our whole town was wired with cable though so everyone could get cable internet, so in high school lots of people would talk about the games they had the night before etc. But then again the computer to human ratio in america is about 2:1

The point made was that there are no irish servers. Simply saying that there are loads.
Hardly our fault if people dont use them, but then again thats pretty much typical of irish gamers always sitting on their butts moaning but never getting off their arses and doing anything.

    True :)

Croc - you say they're empty, why not hop on IRC, grab a few people and join them.

    Lazy git.

There are a few Irish players on Planetside, you really need broadband for it to be smooth though !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

That goes without saying, which is one reason, I suppose, why there isn't as prolific an online gaming infrastructure in Ireland today compared, say, to the US or even Britain.
It's thanks to Rev and the early pioneers that there are even any Irish game servers at all.

There could be 10-20 like yourself saying the same thing, GET UP OFF UR HOLE and do something.

Jump onto IRC, throw some emails around, post here on boards. Its your kind of MONG attitude that Rev is talking about.

    Again, you are an IDIOT

GET UP OFF UR HOLE AND DO SOMETHING

find out whois admin, get in contact, if you want new maps, link him to new maps, ask him nicely to install it, have a look for server configs for him etc.

The hardwork is already done, the servers are up, they are available, fckin make use of them by getting people together.

hey hey, easy there. I just been playin on it with dcully (i think) for the last hour. But u get a lot of noobs on the irl server tho. and becides u r thinkin i want to play on that server when i couldnt really give a sh1t because ther are better servers out there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,334 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

Ye calm down bazH - I try Irish servers hang around in them for 10-20 mins then leave when I get bored - it's just at the mo' Ireland doesn't have such good Internet/Broadband penetration. Hopefully though it will get better - I am the only one in my circle of friends who has BB, so e-mailing them wont work;). There are Irish players there just not enough....give it time and we'll soon be complaining about overcrowding :D.

i am playing online games in ireland.

cs, dod, ut, bf1942[dc of course], mohaa, pandora tomorrow. most recently been wasting my time with the toca racing driver 2 demo.

we're all over the place. as people have said, get involved in the community.

if ur talking about (snigger) console online gaming, get a life, stick to pc gaming if u can afford it.

I started playing online games with Quake 2 and Total Annihilation. These days I play about 8 or 10 different Half Life mods, Halo, Battlefield 1942 and Code of Duty.

I've been meaning to get into QuakeWorld and Quake3 because they're so bloody popular at LANs. Can't find a copy of Q3 in any of the shops though..

Now that there are so many UK servers and most players are on broadband or at least ISDN I don't see much point in Irish servers. It's not that I don't think there should be communities of Irish players but I don't think the physical location of the hardware really matters.

Ah but it does. There's an atmosphere of Irishness. Think of it as a pub. Would you prefer to be in an Irish pub or an American Bar. And becides your ping is slightly lower.
