my laptop has suddenly started making a strange growling sound for about 6/7 seconds when you turn it on, never at any other time....is this just a mildly irritating thing or a sign of something more worrying...i.e. is it more like a death rattle??

Try clean out the fan, If it starts rattling more, well it could be the fan on the way out, which will nacker the harddrive.

My friend has a laptop with a similar problem except his comes on every few minutes for a maybe 30 secs. I think it an IQON problem.

That sounds normal for a laptop running on batteries. My toshiba is set up to turn the fan on every few minutes to strike a balance between power consumption and cooling.
