If you are monthly paid do you have to get a minimum 1 month notice?

    Yesterday I was given 2 weeks :(

Generally yes. Check your contract though. In special circumstances (like gross misconduct) employers can sack you with no notice.

Googling it seems the *MINIMUM* I'm entitled to is two weeks, but if my contract of Employement has a longer period this applies. I'm sure it says 1 month from either party.

Your notice period is whatever you agree to in your contract.

'Generally' it is taken as the same as the salary payments, in most people's case, monthly. However, to protect people who get paid weekly, I think 2 weeks is the *minimum* redundency notice.

On the other hand, some people have longer notice periods. Personally I have a 3 month one, but if I wanted to leave before that, I'm sure I could negotiate a lot less.
Besides, it wouldnt hold up in a court of law. Its more to protect the employee than the employer.

    Check your contract...

2 weeks per year of service or part thereof is the minimum redundency. This is law and has nothing to do with your contact.

Your contract should state the amount of notice period. This is generally 1, 2 or 4 weeks. If you have been employed for more than 1 year (or 1year -notice period to be exact) you are then entitled to either work the notice period or be paid in liew of working.

If you were asked to leave immediatly then you should get your redundency tax free as well your notice period pay which will be taxed. If this didn't happen then you can go to the wages tribunal and make a complaint (very easy).

If you have been employed for less than a year then it's not as clear on the notice pay, also this presumes that you have been made redundent and have been issued with a redundency notice as well as a valid reason that you have been selected for redundency.
