    Does anyone know how much electricity your average home PC uses, if left on all day ? Is it costing me a fortune to leave it on ? its left on for downloading.

    Don't know exact figures but most pc's use on average around 300watts not including your monitor.

    This is not a huge amount of electricity. About the same as 5 lightbulbs so don't worry about it. It won't add a much to your monthly bill.

    ok back of the envelope calculation

    24 hours * 30 days * 100 W == 72 kWh (units)

    at 12 c a unit thats €8.64 a month, or €100 a year

    not insignificant.

    It would be around 300watt under load but if your just leaving it on for a download it may be around half that providing you have your monitor turned off.

    cheers folks, thanks for the input - did a google also

    found this thread (same problem I am having)

    http://www.pcuser.com.au/pcuser/hs2.nsf/web/6FF8AC62EC3241A5CA256E6D0014BB41

    did a few calculations

    If my PC is at full load with monitor, maximum use is 1/2 a kilowatt.

    Cost per half kilowatt from ESB on the standard meter works out 1.395c per hour.

    gonna throw a few euro coins at the crazy old parentals, should see me through the next few months. I already pay for the broadband service as it is and rent to live there.

    why are house prices so high........
