Well here goes nothing...hopefully someboy here works for/knows about the ehalth systme in this country.

I have two major things that i need to see a doctor about but there are some slight hinderances that need to be taken into account.
I cant afford it...the thought of saving had occured but both of these problems would need regular call-backs to the doctor, possibly with prescriptions and/or specialist help...neither of which come cheap.
I have exams approaching so i dont have time for a job.
Im too young to get a medical card.
I dont want my parents involved.
I also dont want any other friends/family to pay for it.

Dont suppose anybody knows of any medical "schemes" for people in my position?

All/any advice/suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

I'm assuming from this you're currently in College.

You should contact your S.U. as most colleges will have some sort of medical service available. Best of luck.

The college (or so i heard) will pay for medical fee's in excess of €150 if they cant be taken care of (emergency call) by their own staff.

If your in the L.C then im sure there are clinics you could visit.

Bite the bullet, get your parents involved. No matter what the problem is, they're interested in making sure you're well, that's what's paramount to them.

I assume you're talking about an STD (since if it's anything else, you're completely and utterley overreacting), and since you're under 16, you're too young to get a medical card. **** happens. Tell your parents, they'll get a little bit of a shock, but it won't be a big deal. 6 months from now, it'll be but a forgotten memory, something you'll get slagged about 2 years from now. But in 6 months time, without treatment, whatever is growing in your nether regions will be a lot more of a hassle.

The funny thing about growing up is that you spend half of your time hiding things from your parents and being stressed out about stuff, whereas if you come clean with them, they'll probably let you do what you want to do.

Tell your parents. It's the only choice. What's half an hour of slight embarrassment compared to sexual dysfunction for the rest of your life? Jesus, the amount of stress teenagers generate over nothing...were we all really like that?

If it's an STI all treatment and testing are free in your local STI clinic

If it's not that why wouldn't you get your parents involved???

If you're in college, there should be a free medical service, where trips to the doc are free and you pay for the presciption only.

STI clinics are free. Once the embarassment of having to go is overcome, then everything is grand.

If it is anything else, talk to your parents, if they have VHI it might cover some of the expenses.

    On a more serious note

If you go to your local Health Board clinic and explain to them the nature of the situation, they'll be able to sort you out eithier seen one of their own doctors or putting you in touch with someone else who can.

    Yea right! :P

Prevention is better than cure, although not the most reliable for contraception, condoms are one of the few methoda that can protect you from STDs.

    Then you're just being stupid.

What could possibly be more embarrassing that you refuse to go to your parents?

Contraception, might be pregnant, would be a some kind of body art that went wrong and requires treatment. Could be a condition that is the result of drug abuse like solvents or that like. Could be kidney problems due to excessive underage drinking. Could be anything, its not your job to past judgement.

Pretty much anything there, his parents are going to find out about it eventually.
The last thing I'm doing is passing judgement. I'm trying to explain to him that it would save a hell of a lot of problems if he went to his parents....

Im not in college, im in sixth year. Im only seventeen and living with my parents so i canbt get a medical card.

    ITS NOT AN SDT!

I will not, under any circumstance, get my parents involved. I have my reasons and illustrating them would just be tedious on this board.
    PARENTS=NOT AN OPTION.

Also iv been to two g.p.'s and both told me that under no circumstance can they wave the "fee's". One of them did mention something about the public system but that that could take forever.

Im hoping someone knows of some scheme for people that cant afford help, since im past the consent age, but am still too young for a medical card.

Im not trying to sound like a **** man, but i know my parents, telling them would make things worse.

if you were more specific about the problem people might be able to offer better advice.

the local health board clinic seems to be your only option. explain the situation i'm sure they'll help you out, maybe they can arrange some sort of installment based payment if it comes down to it.

I agree. It could be anything, I don't know why everyone assumed it was an STD, that wasn't the first thing I thought when I read that post. It could even be related to more personal things, like depression or an eating disorder. There's plenty of people out there that don't want to get their parents involved over that (they could be part of the problem).

Ok but i dont have a clue where it is. Would there be any way of getting this info without haveing to go to the clinic?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

You ring hte local health board ans ask them where your local clinic is. Seriously if this is about "family planing" and all that stuff you should come out and say it as a doctor may not be the first/only person you would talk to about that.

Perhaps you should check this out anyhow...its not like you have any other options.

If you're not going to be more specific people wont be able to help you.

If you really dont want to discuss it why not wait a coupla weeks and post anon?

If you're desperate enough to get what ever it is fixed get a part time job and save up.

Quite frankly tho you're not helping yourself by boxing yourself into a corner...You're not leaving yourself much choice really are you?

No, and the subject of me feeding people curiosity will now be forever dropped.
    End of discussion.

Also, i dont want this thread to be brought up again so please nobody reply to it anymore.
