Do we need a new DVD format

Crikey. Do we really need DVD's of this quality. Dunno about anyone else but I'm quite happy with what I got. I wonder did the manufacturers actually go out and survey people about their thoughts.

Don't get me wrong, I know technology has to advance, and companies have to turn a profit, but I just invested in DVD technology and I certainly don't want to be forced into buying new equipment in 2 or 3 years time just because the manufacturers/studios stop or reduce the amount of dvd's released in today's format, which is bound to happen.

Of course we do! High-definition TV's! Look how big my tv is! Look i can zoom in on Neo's hair folicles! My willy is bigger than yours!

    Short answer: No.

bah! blue laser based dvd formats have been on the cards for a few years now, Im betting they wont catch on until players that can do both Blue and Red laser dvd's are pretty standard. Plus there's still lots of decisions about the actual encoding formats the new disks will use. There are at least 3 ehanced dvd specs coming up that I have read about.

Its debateable that Joe Soap would have any displays/tv that would be worth a better quality format. The yanks with hidef tv's are the only candidates I can think of - and Im sure even there the improvement would be marginal to say the least.

the answer is no, we do not need a new dvd format.....

companies that have seen the price of dvd players drop however will wanna try and get something new in there, a new cash cow for them... much like that article points out

The short answer to 'do we need a new format' is no, but we will when we all have HD TVs. However, I foresee problems (for me).

I'm a linux user, and as such have only recently been able to play DVDs on my computer, thanks to a program called DeCSS which you may recall a lot of furore about. If MS get their way, it'll be an ideal opportunity for them to lock out alternative operating systems. Even if they don't, there'll be problems for users of Free software, as whatever scrambling system is used is sure to be more secure than CSS.

My aplogies to anyone who sighed as they saw another linux zealot popping into any argument that contains the word 'microsoft', but I do think it's relevent.

Oh, and there's also the fact that I own about 700 DVDs. I'm still in the process of giving away my videos, and I don't want to go through all that again.

Good points there rde and even though I don't use Linux I do agree MS has the power to strangle out the competition.

Ok ok, let me ask you this question there is some tv i read about, it is very expensive but if u buy it it can recive and process 4 seconds faster,

Therefore your TV would be 4 seconds ahead or everone elces - i want 1.

Possibly cable vs. satellite? A television scans its screen at pretty much exactly the same rate it receives each line - fancy digital versions of things like the comb filter don't add any perceptible delay. Digitising and compressing a signal, sending it 35,000 km into space to be processed by a satellite and sent back, then decompressing it andconverting it to analog may take 4 seconds, however.
