Can't get AGP x4

Got a new graphics card (Gainward GeForce4 MX440) recently with x8 AGP capability. My mobo is MS 6309 which can deal with x4 from the specs I've read. Problem is that according to what my Nvidia drivers are telling me through their app in windows my card is only running at x2. So I went to look at my BIOS settings. According to my mobo manual there should be an option for max AGP setting but it isn't there. I have flashed my BIOS before - to my knowledge I have the latest one. The older BIOS settings in the manual allow you to set the AGP max but my newer one wont.

    I'm stumped!

Don't know how reassuring this is, but you're not alone. I have the exact same mobo (yours isn't in a Packard Bell by any chance?) and I can't get my Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis to work at AGP 4x. Whats especially infuriating is the fact that I've just reinstalled the original crappy GeForce 2MX and that is set at 4x!!!

What version of the BIOS have you got? You can check that on the POST screen on start-up. The latest version available on the MSI website is v1.9 BIOS download. If you are using a Packard Bell, my bet is you have version 2.x, and I *think* this is an OEM BIOS that Packard Bell have amended themselves. I don't know about the wisdom of clearing the BIOS in that specific case and reverting to an earlier AMI version, it may have knock on effects.

Have you got the latest VIA 4in1 drivers installed? Your mobo should have a VIA Apollo Pro133A chipset. Try Here

I have read on the VIA site that ATI have disabled AGP 4x on their cards when a VIA chipset is encountered due to compatibility problems, maybe something like that is the problem for you?

Anyway, let us know how you get on, you may be able to help me...

    :(

    Straight from the VIA FAQ...

My VIA chipset and my GeForce video card support 4X AGP. I have 4X AGP set in BIOS but will only run at 2X AGP. Help!

    Answer:

    2 things may cause this.

1)If you are using an ApolloPro133A chipset the BIOS may be providing the wrong chipset information to the operating system and identifying it as an ApolloPro133. Nvidia drivers automatically set 4X AGP to off. This registry patch will correct this.

    2) If you have used a tweaking program for your GeForce card it may have set your VIA chipset 4X AGP to off in the registry. Download and run this patch to correct it.
