This is the configuration of my friends machine, its an assembled PC.

    Motherboard : Intel
    RAM : 512MB 4200
    Processor : P4 , 2.5Ghz with HT technology
    Harddisk : 80GB SEAGATE
    DVD/CDwriter Samsung 48X W+16X DVD
    Keyboard : standard Logitech PS2
Mouse : standard Logitech scroll PS2/AT
sound card : creative Creative 5.10
    Monitor : 17" flat LG 17" Flatron- 775
    AGP : 64 mb Geoforce 2MX-400
    UPS : APC 4050
FLOPPY DRIVES Sony 1.44 mb 430
    CABINET: ATX

Everything was working well for the first 3 months, now a weird problem regarding heat. The monitor shows a message saying system is overheated so shut down the machine. Can't find out what was going wrong ?

Moderator, I am sorry , if its the wrong thread for this question ! I haven't a clue its a hardware or software problem ! As the UPS can be configured via software !

    Lads help is needed !
    cheers,
    RHN

have you checked that all the fans are operational?
    CPU fan?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 140 ✭✭redhat_newbie

There are 3 fans , all fans are working well.

    It displays

The system has exceeded the recommended temperature
    Fans rate

if you leave it for some time without doing anything

It says the system is back to normal temperature

Restored the BIOS to default settings.
    Again same messages.

You would be better off posting this in Technology.

at the risk of stating the obvious

Sounds like the computer is overheating

Are all your fans still working, and have you changed anything recently?

Maybe install and run 'speedfan' and see what it says your temperatures are at. Speedfan lets you run your fans faster/slower depending how hot your machine is. However if its overheating in normal use it sounds like
    either
there is not enough airflow in your case
    or
one of your fans is worn out.

sorry i didnt read your earlier reply where you said all your fans are functional.

Anyway try installing speedfan and see what your temperatures are at. If they are too high you may have to get an extra fan, or open up your case.

    No Thermal Monitoring Software?

Tie back the cables so there is good airflow. What sometimes happens me is that the cpu fan turns itself off so watch for that. It happened me when i had mbm 5 and winbond HW Doctor going at the same time.

Your PC is giving problems under load, I believe that the Heatsink isnt making proper contact with the CPU. Maybe ya let it down hard and the heatsink has become loose. Thermal Contact could use replacing maybe

Thanks a million for the help and reply silverside !
    But

Temperature = 51 (didn't get teh System Units)
Fan speed = 3213 (didn't get the system units hz or ghz)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,372 ✭✭✭silverside

ok now leave it running for a while with the computer under load (run FarCfry demo or something like that). Watch the temps and tell us what they are like just before it shuts down.

51 isnt that high but we don't know if that is the temperature on the chip itself, or just generally in the case. Do you know where the temperature sensor is?

And look in the BIOS to see what the 'shutdown temperature' is.

Thats when its doing nothing? That is quite high for idle. Watch the Temps while ya have something running that will have the CPU at 100% constantly.
