Do humans mark their territory too?

OK, firstly let me state that I think humans are just smart animals and we do all the primitive/instinctual things that animals do.

    ...

You know the way animals mark their territory? For example, dogs pee everywhere.

Well, on my way into work this morning I started looking at all the houses and how they all have the distinctive marks of their owners.

Now, I know us humans like to make things look pretty, but do you think a big part of this painting your house/naming your house etc. is simply a subconscious way of marking our territory? As in, it is actually driven by instincts rather than making something look pretty?

If you know what I mean...

Walls are used to mark our territory. Not sure if they are a good or bad thing though.

    Very Deep...

Probably true only to the subconcious though i'd say.
Marking property is done also for practical reasons like nameing/numbering houses for post, painting houses to fulfill a need to live somewhere that looks nice etc....

Its done too as most of us strive to maintane our individual status in an increasingly
    generic society...
    (Maybe)

Dogs pee to mark their territory. We put scary clown faces on our wheelie bins.

I think it would be more akin to feathering a nest ratherr than marking territory.
Marking territory, on a base level is done to ward off others, and i don't think, even on the most subconscious level that that is our motivation.

And i'd tend to agree with spoofilyj,

Yes, we do. Like when you go to the beach, people put towels and things around the space they're using to keep other people away. Or at uni, if you go into a lecture hall with only a few people in it, it would seem weird to sit right next to sb you didn't know rather than finding your own space.

I was wondering this the last day taking a piss. Did we still emit the pheronomes that our evolutionary forefathers presumably did. If we do, are we just not sensitive to it nymore? or are other things drowning it out?

We do. I've read lots on this topic.

They say people should not shower daily as that removes our pheromones which attracts mates.

They also say our pheromones are all about our immune system. As in, our pheromones let others see what our immune system is good at fighting, and we are attracted to people who's immune system is different to our own.

    It's a very interesting area...

yeah, i remember seeing a program on the discovery channel about that...we are most compatible with members of the opposite sex that have strong immunity where ours is weak and vice versa. twas all very scientific and credible, compelling viewing.

I presume B.O is different from this, thats just bacteria making hay and baby bacteria in our stale sweat. So there's no way of working this one. Also I remember seeing somekind of pherenome product in the back of FHM years ago. Anyone tried this kinda thing? mad if it worked...

I dunno about you stupid people but I decorate things for the aesthetic value. Stuff I like looking at makes me happy. But you people are stupid.

In conclusion, I dunno, you're stupid.
