What is the best way to learn guitar? Is it by getting a professional teacher or teaching myself? How many of ye have thought yourselves?

I've already another topic on this, I just want to start another one.

I'm self taught but it depends on how well you want to be able to play. I'm lacking completely in theory and I can't get my head round it. A teacher can show you all this and explain it to you.

I'm self taught aswell. I learnt by getting a friend to show me how to play some music I liked and went from there.

Learning to play music is not just learning the mechanic of playing, and the theory of the music but also developing your ear, so you know the difference between a good and a bad note, and what sounds good and what sounds bad. I find trying to copy music you know well really helps with this.

Start off with lessons, at least until your basics are good and solid.
After that, do what you like, either self-develop, or keep getting lessons.

Getting lessons to start is probably a good idea. A good teacher will help you to avoid developing bad playing practice, which will be almost impossible to unlearn later ( trust me - I still can't use my little finger to solo and my barring abilities are dreadful - this is the legacy of being self taught ). Ultimately, learn how to read tab, search for your favourite song tabs on the net, and try to play along with unfamiliar songs on the radio to develop your ear and improvisational skills. You'll need a good knowledge of music theory and a good ear ( can be learned ) to be a good versatile guitarist.

    Practice, practice, practice.

Try starting off learning a few of the chords with a book/internet. Try that for about a month until you've got some callousses on your fingers, and can play 3 or 4 chords. Then get some lessons. There's no point in spending money for lessons on how to do an A chord etc. You're better off having a little bit of practice first, this will make lessons more interesting and rewarding.
