Weird PC100 memory problem

    I just bought this

    https://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=116296&view=detailed

from komplett last week (they had the price at€39 last week for some reason?:D )

It wouldn't install on a Dell 933L series even though the board currently uses PC133 (so should be backwards compatible with slower speeds yeah?) and on a gateway it gives an error on boot about Serial presence detetor (SPD) not recognised but then seems to boot normally once I skip error?

the only unusual thing i notice about the memory is that it is higher than a regular memory chip and is x72 rather than x64 (all other specs as normal PC100, CL2 non ECC etc etc)

Any idea what this means and am I likely to have performance problems? I'd also like to get rid of the error message on boot - bios options rather limited...

You should have done some research. The stuff you bought is ECC Registered RAM - f**k all good for an Optiplex. Maybe if you speak nice to them they'll give you a refund, but don't hold your breath...

Dell PCs are very fussy about RAM. Check out their website for approved vendors.

The majority of PCs don't like ECC RAM, not just Dells. Killah_B should have RTFM before he purchased.

Yeah, ECC ram is generally used in high end workstations or servers.

it was komplett's easter sale last week, which would explain the price.

stick it up on the fs general forum for €50-€60

    ah go fcuk yourself chipzilla

it was researched - do some your ****ing self as a 933L isn't an optiplex - where's your fcking answers regarding the SPD? you have no answers - only that it don't seem to work - which i knew already d*ckhead

As for RTFM - I read two whole manuals called A+ certifed tech and Network+ certified - if you're not gonna be helpful go fcuk yourself you fcuking fcuk

most people on this forum are helpful - youre just a fcuking asshole

col-Loki - I'm expecting a ban - but fcukheads like chipzilla don't deserve anything more than personal abuse...

    you didn't answer anything f*ckhead - RTFM? f*ck you b*tch.

    rajt, calm down a little

first off, if that pc100 memory is being run at pc133 u could have errors there. It only works one way, you can run pc133 at pc100 speeds, but not pc100 at pc133 speeds, well you can, but its basically overclocking the ram, which can be errors.

SPD is serial presence detect if i remember correctly, and basically tells the motherboard what the ram is.

Dell's are very picky about what Ram they run with, you really do have to check the dell site to know for sure, or go to http://www.kingston.com and put in your model and it'll give you a compatable ram type.

Afaik, with ecc ram, it should be ok to run with ecc disabled, but the chips themselves are generally not as fast as vanilla non-ecc ram.

Shut up. The 933L is an Optiplex GX110. Two minutes on the Dell support site would have told you the specs of that machine, and that the part numbers for RAM for it were 311-2540 and 311-2542. Another two minutes reading the product description on that Komplett page would have told you that you were buying Crucial SDRAM PC100 256MB ECC/REG CL2 Registered, ECC, 3.3V, 32Meg x 72, 8ns. If you even had the brains to check the memory selector on the Crucial website, you would soon have found out what was compatible. So don't bore me with your ranting and raving - go back and read your A+ books some more. You could do with the education. Read a dictionary too and expand your vocabulary a bit.

calm today - very very tired last night

but still, RTFM i s not helpful. This forum exists so people can ask questions. IF the standard answers were as arrogant as chipzillas, the forum would die very fast, and people trying to learn things wouldn't post.

Thanks for the info ref the memory - it works fine without errors except for the spd on boot.

do you have any other modules installed with the new ECC one?

PC133 CL2 will run at PC133 no probs, usually the motherboard will then drop it to CL3 automatically. The board is probably reporing the SPD problem because the memory is idenitfying itself as PC100 and the board wants 133. Hence no VALID SPD information is available.

i have to say though, Ive read A+ and Network+ and I thought they weren't worth a w@nk!
