    Set up an old dish and receiver for my father in law at the weekend. According to my compass l should have been picking up astra 28, but the channels were Vox, RTL, Eurosport, etc and all foreigh.
    I think the set up is an old analogue system (amstrad), so l took it down again. Could l have been picking up a different sat? Anyone any thoughts

    You could be picking up Astra on 23.5

    if its an analogue system then you were seeing Astra 1 at 19.2° East

    there is no analogue transmissions on Astra 2 btw

    remember 28.2E is angle around equator from Greenwich 0 line. It is NOT the compass bearing in Ireland.

    E.g. in Limerick, the Satellite at due south is actually at 8W.

    go http://www.lyngsat.com/tracker/astra2d.shtml

    Click on Ireland till you get the "your latitude" and "your Longtitude" correct

    For 8W and 52N (Limerick approx) the compass bearing and elevation is:
    Azimuth= 137 degree (approx)
    Elevation = 21 degree (approx)

    Also you need to correct up to 6 degrees for magnetic north / true north variation.

    My steel gas bulk tank, 8ft away from dishes makes the compass near useless. It points at the tank!
