When I CTRL+ALT+DEL, and choose Task Manager from the menu, I notice that there are many .exe programs under Processes tab while the program's I am using are in the applications tab.

What's the difference between both and can some/any/all of the program's under the processes tab be stopped?

yes, no and maybe. and maybe not too!

to help you identify what all those processes do, go to this site which explains what each process is doing on your system: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

it's an invaluable tool for finding out whats what.

You Google for them. Those services seem to be related to an Iomega drive, do you have an Iomega drive?

Alternatively, if you search your own machine for unknown processes, it'll probably explain what they are, e.g. if the above two are to do with an Iomega disk, they'll be in an Iomega folder :)

those processes are for iomega zip disk, they allow applications to be run directly from a disk, they're used if you want a program to launch on insertion of a disk, nothin to worry about

that's some list of processes. interesting how many can be related to a virus. svch0st.exe instead of svchost.exe for instance.

just wondering though, can someone explain the difference between an application and process?

An application is a word with no actual meaning IMO, but tends to refer to a full program, which can contain multiple processes (though strictly speaking, it should be one process, which spawns sub-processes).
For all intents and purposes, it's possible to kill a single process without killing the entire application, but it's not possible to kill the entire application without shutting down all the processes,
