Mandrake 9.2 - modem problem

I've installed Mandrake 9.2 - looks good. - my first stab at linux :)

I tried to connect to Internet by dialup modem 56K
    model WISECOM 5614Es3G external.
In Hardware config it's recognised as
    Modem TTYS0
Info shows as ; Old Device File : /dev/ttyS0

It will dial for me , but the modem at the other end immediately gives busy signal.
IOL tell me (from their end) it does not connect to the server.
    Looks like a driver issue
I've searched for an updated linux driver for it - no luck. Maybe I don't know wheree to look - too many years with Bill Gates ....

My other PC (XP professional) has no problem connecting on the same line.

    Puzzled :(

    Any comments ?

first off query modem and see if everythings okay, i.e. no errors even though u can dial..

keep the password to pap/chap it'll disconnect at the last sec otherwords

theres an option ( i think its the lock file) where it wil tell u the error if the modem cant connect

i take it ur using kppp, try minicom to connect or wvdial

see what results u get from them

    :)

    It's not a driver issue.
    Double check your settings.
It's dialling, and getting a busy signal, so it's doing its end of the job.
It may need a special init string to turn on a required negotiation.
For example it may be simply refuse all connedtions slower than 56k! Unlikely though as you're getting a busy tone.
Are you positive it's dialling the right number ? :-)
Check to see what is dialled - if it's using any extra digits for any reason.
Except for software modems, modem drivers are a bit of a misnomer.
Check your XP settings to see if there is any extra initialisation string being used - probably Advanced Modem Properties or something like that.
It will just be a few letters. Try adding them to its init string.

You don't mention what you're using to try and dialup.
If you can't get anything else to work, wvdial is meant to be easy to configure.
Run wvdialconf and it'll ask you the usual questions.

Of course I WAS ! (positive that is ) :o

I'm a dummy ! The number was wrong . I've corrected it and now it works a dream.

    Thanks

I'm using DRAKconnect from the DrakControlCentre (Network & Internet) to connect

That involves going all over the houses to connect.
Now if only I could create a shortcut /icon to do all that ;)

and i hope you are using galeon

    others fail in comparison :)

Actually, for boards in particular, try dillo.
I find boards loads really slowly in most browsers on my main machine (PIII-650,384M), but flies in with dillo in under a second.

urpmi dillo and give it a go.

Galeon is up and running - right it is neater :D

Now If I only could understand what you meant by 'urpmi dillo' . Is that for entry at command prompt in Konsole. Will try it later on .....
(EDIT: Got it ! It'a a FTP prog - download from somewhere.............?)

Remember I'm a complete beginner to Linux.

I'm currently trying to link it via a hub to an XP PC also. - I had that working when both were XP only. Now the Mandrake is dual boot (LILO).
That struggle is another story ;)

Is LinNeighbourhood akin to Netneighborhood in WinXP ?
The concept of 'Map drives' and 'Mount volume' is testing me also ........

urpmi is the mandrake package manager.
Just type urpmi dillo at the konsole prompt and see what happens.
If it says it can't find it, you'll need to add the Mandrake Contrib sources to your package manager.
It's not essential, but it makes installing software so easy,
    you need to see it!

Anytime you want to try out a program, give urpmi programname a shot.
If a package is on your CDs or ftp sites, it'll just install it including any other packages it needs to work.

This thread covers the use of urpmi quite well, and there are others if you search for them right here on boards.
