in reference to the bishop saying non-practicing people shouldn't have church weddings does that mean i couldn't have a a church funeral

if i died tmw my family would arrange one in my local church now it wouldn't really effect me and it would help my family grieve but again it wouldnt be appropiate my thoughts on life which they well know ( for the mo its ,when you're dead you're worms)

what is the alternative to a church funeral ?

was trying to phrase questions for a poll but couldn't do it ...

Well the funeral is strictly a religious event as far as I know, I suppose a wake maybe with your family saying pieces or something to that effect.
I think though that one should do what would make their families grieve easier.

You could have some sort of service in the funeral home. If you are serious about this, you should consider doing a will.

There's always excarnation, if you have some vultures or ravens handy.

The Irish Humanists arrange non-religious funeral ceremonies. They don't have a whole lot of info on their site but they have a book you can buy on the subject.

I don't know here, but in Italy there are quite a few people who don't have a Religious funeral.
the last one i have to was really great (I know, it doesn't seem very appropriate for a funeral saying this.) with the citizen band playing comunist songs and a wonderful speech of my uncle's (who was dead!) friend.

That's interesting. I've come to the conclusion that Marxism/Communism is a sort of secular religion

D'you know, I quite fancy the idea. Might get messy in our weather though.

Wouldn't crows work just as well...........

Yeah, but they'd leave bits of you all over the bloody place. They're messy eaters.

Is it really that important how you go off - after all if you're dead you won't notice if you're in a church or whatever???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,090 ✭✭✭jill_valentine

Not really, but I'd feel like a bit of a hippocrite if I spent my entire life railing against the church and everything it stands for, and then having a church funeral. Thats like cramming for an exam.

Short answer to this, chewy, is YES you can have a church funeral. The R.C. church is not canonically judgemental about the life you may have led or your atheist beliefs in life. Doesn't matter if you were a Hitler, a Stalin or a serial killer you can have a Catholic burial. Something to do with "Forgiveness" and the fact that you might have had a "Road to Damascus" conversion or a repentance for your sins on your death-bed. Sounds fair enough to me.

On the other hand, if you want your carcass picked over by vultures and ravens , fair enough. It's your funeral. :dunno:

    just get cremated.

and have a party .that it . nobody can tellyou other wise it up to you your wishes

make a will and tell every body.
if you have your own estate you can be buried on your own land.

no one is forced too have a religious funeral if you don;t want one.

god is man made just like the tv . the only trouble is you can see the tv.

but you cannot see god. because he does not exist.if he did hes got a lot to answer for.

i was a witness in court too a accident.

i told them i did not believe in god. but i still gave evidence.

without swearing on the bible. ok religion is not a law. honesty is the best , a law abiding' person.

they don't seem to be using .KP yet.

Well you can't be burried in your back garden it's illegal. You could donate your body to science and have a hand over ceremony, should save a few shillings for the booze up.

Your better off not having a church funeral anyway, do you want a jaded disgraceful priest standing over your grave?, the Nazi party had more morals then the Christian church

This is what I want to do, or well have done to me. After all my useful organs had been removed and after a nice ceremony to be left under a tree somewhere to feed carrion and nourish the grass.

I wonder what the legals are on it. Can you just leave a body out to rot?

No no, the Pope and Ian Paisley conspired to outlaw it.

All your purgatory soles are belong to us!

The cops don't really like this. Too much hassle with a bunch of yobs start stealing from the cemetary.

There would also be public health issues.
