Well Had my first redeye of the year today.
I was fishing the canal in Mullingar
This fellow was quite unexpected because I was out for a few silverfish.

As soon as I struck into him I kenw well it was no roach.. ;-)

    About 3 1/2 - 4 lb I think.. didnt have a scales to hand.
Caught on a size 16 (yes feckin tiny) hook baited with 2 red maggots.
I'd been fishing the swim about 3 to 4 hours, with a count of about 10 roach and 2 perch when this fella showed up.

After I had hooked him I then realised that I had the size 16 and working with 2lb breaking strain line, he had his way with me for a while...
Glad my reel was up to the challenge..

Anyway about 5 - 7 mins later I landed him and it felt great getting him (well actually her) into the net...

While I was taking the photos I noticed that an essocks had a go at her at some recent stage..

So I made sure to let her gently into the water immediately after the pics, and that she was well able to look after herself before I let her go.

Anywyay A great days sport, and now I'm sure that my favourite fish are back for the summer...
    :-)
