K i have one of these lidl optical wireless mouses and i'm trying to get it to work with the usb port as popular opinion has it that usb >> ps/2.

    It's a pretty old machine.
    p3 550,
    128mb ram,
    Geforce2 mx200,
    sblive,
    isdncard,
    56k modem card,
    lan card,
    dvd drive,
    cdrw drive
And running on win 98 se.
I'm not sure wat chipset it is but i think its an old intel model.

so here's the problem. I plug in the mouse to the usb port and the computer freezes. So i reset it. Then the computer doesn't even boot if the mouse is plugged into the usb port. I plug it out and it boots up fine.

I'm fairly sure it's usb 1.1 ports on it but i don't think that wud cause the problem but i could be wrong. Also the mouse works fine when i use the ps/2 adapter.

I've tried the mouse on another machine with the usb port and it works fine, albeit on usb2.0.

I've tried completely removing any old mouse drivers in windows safe mode to see it that helped but to no avail. I've also rumaged around the bios looking for anything that may help. I found a thing about a usb keyboard and enabled it as well as putting on slow boot but nothing worked. I'm not sure wether usb drivers can be updated but i've no idea where to get em if i can get em. Also i've no other usb devices to test on this machine so i'm not sure if its just a prob with the mouse or somthing with the usb ports in general.

Any help greatly appreciated as i've tried everything i could think of and i'm still stumped.

Oh and if any1 wants more info please ask.

    Cheers! :)

You're not going to get any gain by using USB over PS/2 for the mouse, just stick with the adaptor and continue using it as normal... you should be trouble free and still have a valuable USB port unfilled

K i got my hands on a usb pen drive and stuck it in my machine to see if it worked but the same thing happens.

Also v interesting i booted up my knoppix v3.3 linux cd and the computer boots up fine and the mouse works perfectly.

In short the problem is not the mouse or the computer, ITS WINDOWS!! (big surprise). And know usb device is going to work in windows until i get this fixed!

trouble is i still don'e know where or how to get usb drivers/software to update. Some1 out there must know! :D

Windows98 USB support isn't great. Have you tried windows update? There might be some relevant hotfixes or something? Or, if you know the make and model of your motherboard, try downloading drivers for it.

K i tried windows update and have all the most recent updates. Unfortunately nothing about usb fixes there.

Also i rooted around in the machine and found out that its an Aopen AX6BC slot1 board thats in there. I visited the Aopen site to look for drivers. Nothing specific for win98. I did dl latest bios and anything else that looked relevent but the problem still remains!

I also did a google on the board looking for anything about usb issues but i havn't found anything.

So i'm still stuck. Any1 able to help at this stage or is it just a computer anomily?

I don't think WIN98 has the best support for plug and play devices. Did you download the drivers needed for the USB mouse or the USB pen drive.

Worth a shot: Win 98 USB driver update. I know it says for AMD but worth a shot.

Could be a dodgy USB slot. Used to happen me in a dell machine except it was a PCI slot that was the culprit. Plugged a LAN card in, booted up and the whole machine froze. Check it in a couple of USB ports.

Just use the PS/2 port - the sample rate of PS/2 is faster aswell, so if you're playing games it will give you the edge!

I tried both usb ports alright but its the same for both and like i said it works perfectly in linux. The problem is def a windows thing not the ports themselves.

And i know i cud just use the ps/2 port but what if i want to use another usb device? i won't be able.

I installed the software that came with the mouse but it there didn't seem to be any win98 specific drivers. just software to bind the extra buttons. I'll have to have another look tho.

Thanks for the replies anyway. I won't get to use the machine for a while but i will def try that usb fix even tho it's a p3. :D

    Cheers!

    Put windows 2000 on it.

USB is pointless for keyboards & mice & things like that. Waste of a perfectly good USB port.

seen this pleanty of times. Windows 98 needs USB drivers to be reloaded when you actually use the USB ports!!!
I cant remember exactly where i downloaded them from but probably www.driverguide.com
