Here's the details (from last week's Motorsport News):

The new A1 Grand Prix single-seater series was officially launced in Dubai yesterday (Tuesday).

Organisers are planning to run cars in national racing colours to create a World Cup of Motorsport. So far 24 countries have registered an interest.

The first event in a nine-race series is due to take place at the Dubai International circuit in November 2005 and races will run in the Southern Hemisphere through to February 2006. The intention is to avoid clashes with the Formula One world championship.

Further championship and circuit details were due to be announced after Motorsport News had closed for press.

British compaines Lola and Langford have built the chassis and 3.5 litre engines. His Highness Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum, president of the series and nephew to the crown prince of Dubai, shook the first car down at the Hethel test track in Norfolk earlier this month. He visited the Lola factory at Huntingdon last week.

The Sheikh ran 10 trouble-free laps in the car while sportscar racer Ben Devlin completed 40 laps.

Lola has received an order for 30 cars. A spokesman said: "This is an attractive series that offers developing countries a chance to get involved in motor sport. It's also a significant boost for Lola."

See next week's MN for the full launch story.

The car itself is a pretty futuristic looking thing, judging from the artist impressions. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up going the way of the Premier 1 Grand Prix series (remember that? Cars that were to be painted in the colours of various football clubs.) that never got off the ground either. This might, just might have a better chance of getting off the ground than the Premier 1 series, because it's countries involved and not football clubs, but I don't hold out much hope for some reason. There's just so many rival series around at the moment like Formula Renault V6, Nissan World Series, Euro 3000, Formula 3000, the upcoming Formula 2 G.P. series, etc. The market seems to be almost saturated with rival junior single-seater formulae nowadays.
