Ok, i bought a 2 new 120gig maxtor off komplett bout 6 weeks ago, i set one up immediately and its running ok, i finaly went to set up the other in the past few days, first i put it as slave to this machine so i could set up the partitions.

put it my other machine today to set install the os.

all i am getting is a very nastie knocking noise and kompletts customer support closed at 3pm.

I am assuming its terminal? any suggestions?

the other hd, in this machine has been getting very noise of late, more like the hd's of old, how worried should i be about that?

Download maxtor's diagnostic tools and run them. They should be able to tell you if anything is wrong with the drive.

I think they run of a floppy boot disk, but there's nothing to stop you making a bootable CD, i think they only need write access to write a log file when the diagnostic is complete.

Maxtor drives are dodgey. Sounds like it's on the way out and it's only new. If you have to replace them ask them for samsung or seagate drives instead.

Bit of a sweeping generalisation there don't you think? I have a maxtor drive that's been going for a good few years.

well i got to agree, i have a 20 gig for 4 yrs only now giving probs, and 2 40gigs which are both full and never giving problems at all.

i reckon must be a bad batch or botched delivery, got a few knocks or something

I agree with there not being much wrong with maxtors. I had one that was great, however it did die - but that might have been due to the fact that it overheated and the guys that I lived with (you know who you are!) decided to flip the fuses on and off a few times one night! It sounded like a sick puppy after that...

    My 2 cents
