i'm looking for a UPS system for a webcam [with built-in modem]
it IS NOT for a pc, only the cam.

    my question is:
can you get ups's for this low a power demand?
    and, where are they?
it also needs to be pretty compact.

    please help,
    dave

get a rechargeable battery!! a small lead acid one used in alarms will probably do, how much voltage and current does the cam need?

    Power consumption: 5V DC, 300mA
    i guess that's 1.5W??

where would i get a battery like that?
the camera will be in a different country unattended,
so recharging would have to be automatic.
    is this possible?

take a trip to maplins or peats you will get everything you need.

voltage regulator, battery, charging circuit + supply should be all you need.

this solution will be produced for hundreds of units,
so a manual solder-type job is not an option.
is there a "black box" [pre-assembled] solution?

    http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BF350%2DUK

This will do the job for you. no software or computer needed for this little UPS.

If you are going to buy a few of these let me know, I know a man who can get you a good price

    thanx for the link,
do you know if there is something similar available in a single-gang version?
    only need the one plug.
    more compact the better.

what kind of price are those things? [roughly]

the retail for that little UPS is about 80 euro, if you were buying a few of these ( depending on the numbers) you could get them for about 65-70 euro each. There are some other UPS makers out there that might be better value

    Ill get back to ....

As fio a smaller unit., I have never seen one..but Ill ask

my friend tells me there is a www.powerware.com UPS thats 250VA and it costs about 55-60 euro

still no sign of a UPs with one plug ... not much call for it I would say

    ok then.

if anyone knows of a single plug version,
or knows if house alarm battery backup systems can be purchased separately,
    please let me know.

    all help appreciated.

Or at least visit maplins or peats, im thinking something like this is what you want, you can connect the camera directly to the battery, not sure if this particular ones does it but there are many variaties about.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=040408001626573&moduleno=34486&Products=2

A UPS is overkill, you are converting the battery power backup upto 220 ac with an invertor, you just need a DC supply.

    so it is:
mains power --> maplin yolkie --> webcam

allways plugged in, and when power goes, yolkie kicks-in and supplies power instead?
    it looks a bit toy-like.

more opinions on this new entry???

Alany's suggestion of approaching an alarm supplier, or even a large electrical distributor is probably best most standard alarm boxes (the lovely little white metal cases you see in most office plant rooms) will have a 6 or 12v lead acid battery a charging circuit and output and plenty of free space inside for anything else you want to add.
