You'd be surprised. More often than not, it's the women who dont like the idea. Plus, I guess the logistics must be pretty difficult to work out. Either have sex on the grass or on a tarpaulin sheet. Tarpaulin isn't comfortable and Ireland doesn't exactly have the weather for it...

I think I'll ban 'text speak' from PI, I had to read that 3 times over to get it

    anyway
to answer your question, I had really bad pains for over 6 months, don't know why, perhaps stress, I was perscribed ponsten (sp) by the doctor. I would suggest you go see your doctor for advice on what you should take as everyone is different when it comes to this and what might work from me, may not for you

I find correct punctuation and grammatication usage to help immeasurably.

then it's back to the doctor again until they give you something that works

I have heard that primrose oil can help but it has to be taken over a long period of time to see any effect

OK...I'm a bloke, and have no input as to the alleviation of the oul period pain.

I do have a comment about "sex during period".

I would be up for it, if the girl was.

Only once have I done it though, very messy, but very nice, in a weird kinda way.

The girl said she got more "horny" during her period.

    nope....sorry.not 4 me!

If you had read the Red Tent you'd understand the relevance, but I digress.

    Have you tried vodka?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭Lainey

so barbie.. it seems to me the only way to combat this is to take ponston.. have sex without protection to get pregnant while takin big slugs of vodka..

    good luck with that.. :D

I am no Doc but have a few words to say about your period pains

The reason he told you that having a child would help is cause it will widen your cervix (or something to that effect).

Now, not putting ideas in your head-am not a doc- but I knew a girl once who had awful awful pains and she got something done called a "D&C Scrape" (I believe this is to widen her cervix and stop the uterus contracting-or something to that effect)

Maybe this is specific to her condition but I know she was right as rain after this.

This requires surgery and an over night stay in hospital

Having period pain is like having a mini contraction (uterus contracting).
Taking breathing excercises can also help (honest!)-drug free.

Also, stay away from caffine related products (coffee, coke etc) as this can affect the contractions and stimulate them further.

If you smoke, do not smoke when you are in pain or a few days before your period as this cuts down oxygen needed (hence as I said above breathing exercises can help-i.e yoga etc).

If you know someone willing to give you a back rub/massage, do it.

like zervi said with the caffeine, there seems to b a link between diet and menstrual pain. Your primary spasmodic dysmenorrhoea (not dissmenorreah) is the most common type so ur not alone. Sugar, caffeine, animal fats, meat, dairy etc seem to aggravate menstrual pain. Veg/fibre seems to ease it. Chocolate gives u a quick phenylethylamine rush (same chemical u get when ur in luv) but the sugar/saturated fat/caffeine in it makes u pay later. with pain. menstrual pain. spasmodic menstrual pain.
No, No, Nooooo! not the chocolate!!!!! aaahhhhhhh
an wot th fuk iz wrng wiv txt sp33k neway? man, dat b3ruthiel 1z a p4in in da c3rvix.

    http://www.pcrm.org/research/menstrual.html
One of the treatments we are testing is the use of a very-low-fat, vegetarian diet. We are using this diet because, when it is properly followed, it has the very helpful effect of reducing the amount of estrogen in the blood, sometimes to a striking degree.
...diets that avoid animal products and keep vegetable oils to a bare minimum cause a marked reduction in menstrual pain, presumably because of the diet’s effect on hormones.

Nutritional factors appear to play an important role in managing menstrual pain.

plant products contain fiber (roughage), which tends to carry estrogens out of the body.

In addition to individual reports that low-fat, vegetarian diets can cause dramatic reductions in menstrual pain, vegetarians also have fewer ovulatory disturbances.

in addition to keeping animal products out of the diet, it is important to avoid oily salad dressings, french fries, potato chips, butter, margarine, cooking oils, and the shortening that is in many cookies and pastries. It also appears to be important to make this change for the entire month, not just before your period.

Caffeine aggravates PMS, and the more caffeine you consume—in coffee, tea, colas, or chocolate—the worse your PMS is likely to get

ps. its still important 2 get fat into ur diet, jus the right type... olive oil with cold pressed xtra virgins is best

I've found the contraceptive injection Depo Provera to be extremely helpful. In most cases it makes your periods stop but you have to talk to your doctor either way.

    Have you seen a gynaecologist?

Persistent pain that wont go away with drugs.... well you could have endometriosis.

Its extremely painful but is treatable.

If I were you, I would make an appointment. Endometriosis if left untreated can cause fertility and conception problems in the future.

Better to be safe than sorry.

I've heard that sometimes simply a change of pill can help-thankfully the first one I took worked for me.

However if the one you were prescribed hasn't worked for you I'd echo embee's advice that you should go to a gynaecologist or at least back to your doctor and get checked out.

My friend had this. She is just after coming out of the hospital after having a hysterectomy. :(

Better safe than sorry as embee said. Endometriosis is alot more common than people think.

Hey Barbie, glad to hear your feeling better now, I know just how you feel, every six months or so, during my period I do this whole fainting thing and end up with really bad cramps and a messed up head. Last time it happened I was on a training day for a new job, and I ended up being carted off in an ambulance! Very very embaressing! I'd have to agree with the girls above though, go to your GP and get him to recommend you a good letter for a gynaecologist. If its consistently bad, and you've tried all the Ponstan ect pills and they don't work, then he will probably send you for a D&C scrape. I've heard that that stops it in pretty much every woman that goes through with it, so it's gotta be worth the surgery. :p

Barbie, sorry to hear your suffering, like you I was the same, for years every month I had to come home from school having nearly passed out with the pain or vomitting all over the place. The only thing that alleviated the pain was a hot water bottle, I then took the pill when I was 17, which worked, came off it again at 19 but the pains came back, and the only thing that cured me was pregnancy and having my son. Thank God, so far (6 years on) my periods are fine and I don't need to take the pill (I can't anymore). However it is a fairly drastic measure, (however when your in that much pain you'd contemplate anything) My son did leave a few legacies, including varicous vains and piles, but I'd much rather have them than those awful period pains. I believe too that a D&C will help and is a lot less drastic than pregnancy. (Please note this is not the reason why I had a child, lol)
