Outdoor Archery this Summer

Any details on where/when ect... out door archery will be on this summer, like Lexlip, Dulbin Archers ect?

Also will students need to join these clubs in order to practice there, and who do we contact in order to individually join the IAAA and shoot at the outdoor competitions?

If we have this info i think more students will shoot outdoor, so basically:

(1): Where and when can we shoot outdoors?
(2): What do we have to do to shoot there?
(3): What do we have to do to shoot outdoor competitions?

This mainly depends if Im in the country this summer or not, I honestly dont know yet, but:

Wilsons is generally free for at least one or two weekends in the summer - its central (couple of miles from mullingar), has plenty of shootable land in it, and best of all I live there so wouldnt have to travel, and my Dad is the headmaster so we could have the place free of charge.

Again, all depends if Im here for the summer.

    Will let ye know.

    Regards

    Ewan

Any IAAA club whenever they train. Dublin Archers are going outdoors on the 25th I think. They train Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays but Fridays and Sundays are outdoors. Sundays from the 25th on they'll be outdoors. Not sure when they're going outdoors for the Fridays.

(2): What do we have to do to shoot there?

Not sure on this for definite but Sinead said last year that once the club is IAAA Affiliated then you can TRAIN outdoors. You need to be affiliated personally to COMPETE outdoors, as far as I am aware.

To affiliate you'll need to send 40 euro, for students, to the IAAA.
    IAAA Contact Details
A form went around to all the clubs last year but not this year so I don't remember off hand what details they want. But I'd go with the usual stuff: name, address, club, type of membership. They also had a part for a proposer and seconder. I just used any two people in my club.

While we're on the topic of contacting the IAAA. I'd recommend highly against e-mailing iaaa@toxophily.com. I never ever get a reply. Then after a month or two when I remember I haven't gotten a reply I e-mail Richard D'Arcy and he replies within a few days. In case you don't know he's the IAAA President.

(3): What do we have to do to shoot outdoor competitions?

As I said IAAA affiliation and then erm... rain gear is handy. :) This is Ireland after all. I'd highly recommend rain gear for any competition of our good friend in Dublin Archers. :p (Past experiences)

Other than that a fair bit of practise and willingness to go arrow hunting (no not the fun of hitting other peoples arrows - the searching through grass looking for arrows that are rather embedded).

It's good fun all in all. Much harder day than a typical IV shoot of course. 144 arrows (4 rounds *36 arrows).

For those unfamiliar with the distances there's 3 variaties as far as I know:
    short metric (2 rounds * 30m, 2 rounds * 50m), provisional/womens FITA (1 * 30m, 1 * 50m, 1 * 60m & 1 * 70m) and of course full FITA (1 * 30m, 1 * 50m, 1 * 70m & 1 * 90m).

Of course I've not shot outdoors in about 5 years so if I've left something out please fill it in. :D

Where and when can we shoot outdoors?

There will now be no Dublin Archers outdoor tournament at the start of May due to the fact that Máire and Sinéad have exams as do about 60% of the other members. Instead Carlow will probably have one at around that time (8th and 9th). As soon as I hear anything I'll post details. You will probably need IAAA membership to attend (€40 for students).
Also, Sportslink will have an outdoor tournament at the end of May - saturday 29th and sunday 30th (to be confirmed). As soon as I get confirmation I'll post details on this thread as well. As far as Dublin Archers tournaments go, you'll probably have to wait till mid/late August. I hope to see people from all the colleges at that one so we can plan next years IV season and hopefully a DIT outdoor tournament in september/early october.

Either myself, The Sin, mhairesa or Mr Potato Head will try and keep this thread up to date with dates of tournaments over the summer so keep an eye on it if you're interested.
If I can get clarification on students shooting in other clubs, I'll post about that too.

    IAAA Calendar

Lots of "To Be Confirmed" shoots but these often are confirmed. It'll give you an idea of who is planning what and when.

Obviously the Dublin Archers one set for April is a no go. Personally I wouldn't have expected there to have been a shoot there as the Dublin Archers one set for August looks far more organised etc.

So for competitions we need to join the IAAA individually and go to the competitions.

For practice, we can just show up to any practice session of any club??
We don't need to pay membership fees for those clubs?
Also are the college clubs fully affiliated IAAA members?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

Well we will be. That's what they recommended at the IAAA AGM.

Club must be IAAA for its members to shoot outdoors (practise) and members must be IAAA to compete outdoors.

You do pay a fee every time you shoot outdoors at another club. I think Dublin Archers fee is 4 euro for students, though I'm not certain.

It's the same if you were to shoot indoors/outdoors with any IAAA club that you're not personally a member of.

Just to clarify for Podge and any other non-Dublin Archers people.
Outdoor training begins on Sunday the 25th of April and will continue on every subsequent Friday and Sunday in Whitehall. That’s the big field on the Swords Road (the main road from town to the airport before the M1) opposite the Regency Hotel.

Outdoor training on Wednesday will commence on the 5th of May in the field behind St. Paul’s School in Raheny.

    All students are welcome.

For those of you unfortunate enough to live too far away, have a look here to see if there are any closer clubs.

    Short Metric's 50, 50, 30, 30m isn't it?

    What's FITA 900? Provisional FITA/Women's FITA?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 282 ✭✭trig

You've got short metric right. FITA 900 is really a junior event. I think its 30 at 70m, 30 at 50m, 30 at 30m but I'm not sure. Provisional FITA and Ladies FITA are the same thing: 36 at 70m, 36 at 60m, 36 at 50m and 36 at 30m. Provisional FITA is Ladies FITA for men really.
Most meople use it as a stepping stone to full mens FITA from what I can gather cos its a big step from short metric, ie shooting at 50m to mens FITA at 90m. The extra poundage required means you can't just do it overnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 419 ✭✭toxof

    FITA 900 is
    30 arrows at 60m
    30 arrows at 50m
    30 arrows at 40m

The person to ask is Maire, she has done lots of them.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

I will definately take a stab at 90m this summer anyhow.

    Beware all near by!
