Star Wars DVDs top web sales list

The original Star Wars film was released in 1977
The DVDs of the original Star Wars trilogy have topped the charts on internet retailer Amazon's UK website - almost six months before their release.
The Star Wars Trilogy is number one on the site's top 100 DVD chart, despite not being available until September.

And this is remotely a surprise? It was obvious they'd break DVD records - they're much sought after. I personally won't be buying a copy, but it's obvious there are many geeks who will (and buy multiple versions no doubt).

fairly similar to the old VHS box-set designs.

The one from Sandit.com is the better of the two; is that the region two release?

Haven't delved into this product at all so please excuse my naiveity on the issue - but just from looking at those pix isn't there a chance that 'Box 3' is just the reverse side of 'Box 1'? :)

The 4:3 version comes in a gold box; 16:9 widescreen edition in platinum.
Also, the indivdual DVD case artwork will match with Episodes I, II (and presumably III.)

    From the horses mouth:

Why would anyone want to buy the 4:3 version?

I remember hearing that, in the US, 4:3 versions are very popular because widescreen has dem black bars and you seein' less of the picture boss.

If they were the original trilogy then they'd be worth getting but the fact that it's the "Special Edition" trilogy I don't see the point in getting it.

Extra features have been confirmed. Can be found here

    No commentary?

It sounds more impressive than the disapointing (though interesting) extras on the Indy set. I had been hoping that the original trilogy would be given the same treatment as the new trilogy in terms of packaging and design. I'd prefer extra features that were specific to each film, rather than about the trilogy as a whole.

The episode 3 preview shouldn't be there, I don't like this practice, the double disc editions of Lord of the Rings did it too. Advertise on bus shelters, not on DVDs.

And commentaries would be amazing... Lucas gives fascinating commentaries. It'd be good to get Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan and Leigh Brackett involved too. Unfortunately Richard Marquand died a few years ago. A technical ILM commentary would be great too...

Even if they are the special editions, which personally I don't mind although it would be nice to have the two versions.

It looks like the effort is really being put in to make a great dvd box set, the commentary's I am really looking forward to, even if you did not think the EP I & II where that great, the commentaries where really good, and I was surprised by Lucas, considering how little he comments, that his commentary was actually quite good and relaxed, and informative. Also the documentary on EP I was great, and with this new boxset it looks like the new documentary about the original films will be great, and with a running time of 2hr 30mins, its got to have a lot of information in there.

I'm hoping that they will have something on the Lucasfilm/ILM archives of the original props and models, Gentle Giant studios where there recently scanning all of the original props etc.

In 2002 I had a chance to see the Art of Star wars exhibition in a museum in Edinburgh, it was really cool, to see the model's props and costumes, as well as full scale 3P-30 and R2-D2.
