Smoking Ban -vs- Prohibition

Do you think the smoking ban will be like the time of Prohibition? Certain pubs and places having a special 'back room' for certain people to smoke in?

Do you think it will last? I mean, prohibition seemed like a huge deal as well back in the day and more people smoke than drink today so I would imagine the ban wouldnt last long per its effect on local business life.

What are your views in these respects?

Do you see the smoking ban as today's Prohibition? 64 votes

Yes, it is similar in many respects and will last just as long

I think it is similar, but I don't see it coming to an end.

Its not the same as Prohibition, as you still have the right to smoke just not in a workplace. however I do think it'll be like Prohibition in that there will be speak easys for smokers ... somewhere, but with 3000 eur fine to the offender and each person being an offender, all they'd have to do would be give the staff 10% if they ratted them out.

Do more people smoke than drink?

I've noticed that more people dont drink these days but I thought that smoking was only 30% or so...
how come if its less people drink than smoke people will except that you dont smoke but get very confused if you dont drink.

I agree with the last poster.

Prohibition would be stopping you from choosing what to do with your own body.

The ban on smoking in the workplace stops you from poisoning others in their place of work.

The smoking ban is unenforceable. As was prohibition. It is a step too far, and it has already claimed its first victim. The Shadow Fine Gael Minister for 'Justice' HaHa ! has been sacked for smoking in the Dail bar.

Question:- Will he also be fined €3000.00 ?... ;)

    P. :ninja:

Good to see the govt enforce the law against a TD. He deserves to be sacked.

I can't see any govt ever revoking this law. It's not about your right to smoke, but more about other people's right not to be poisoned by your smoking.

The "speak-easy" is the area outside the bar .. street smoking.

Don't see why, seems to be working perfectly so far. Most smokers have accepted that they have to go outside to smoke. I've only seen one person try to light up inside. The barman told him he had to put it out or go outside and that was the end of it.

    I agree, it'll work
hell only takes people to report a bar for not enforcing the law and the publican is risking a fine and nobody wants to fork out €3000

I for one would have no problem what-so-ever reporting a bar for not enforcing the law.

In general I think the general public will enforce this law because if your in a bar with 50 people and 1 person lights up its not going to take long for someone to get the **** out or put it out.

    :D

Moi aussi. If I've pointed out the flaunting of the law and seen them do nothing to rectify the problem, then I too will be ringing up 1890 333 100 ...

will you all stop with these threads....
It makes me want to scream out loud and shake all you non-smokers by the neck until you pass out then extinguish cigars on your genitals- ARRRGGGGHHH!

Every thread about the smoking ban makes me want to nip outside for a smoke.
I think I'll conduct my own experiment, I'll knock up some slapper, keep the baby with the firm intention of blowing smoke at it until it dies- I reckon it'll still survive well into adulthood but that's just me.

Prohibition in the States did NOT outlaw the consumption of alcohol. Only its manufacture and sale.

Therefore, at a speakeasy, the only people that could be prosecuted were those selling the booze, not the ones buying and drinking it. Assuming of course it wasn't a microspeakeasy where the beer was being brewed on the premises.

So you could go out for a drink knowing that it the place was busted, you weren't actually committing the offence. Not really comparable to today where the smoker is the one committing the offence and all the barman could be charged with was failing to prevent it.

That's if I understand hard things like law correctly.

I feel like going around a few pubs with my hidden camera and record any offence of smoking in pubs, a bit like the smoking police.

Imagine all those €3000 fines the publicans would get, revenge time for rip-off drink prices :D

Wonder who would i submit the evidence to...the health board or the gardai:confused:

I dont smoke, I don't know annything about you. but i feel like punching you in the face on general principles, what a smug self righteous attitude.

As I stated already: I've no problems stepping outside to smoke, just so long as every smug baztard that harps on about how great the ban is faces a €3000 gloating fine.

If not me, there will be others that will be doing it like a camera police, for revenge, its bound to happen sooner or later.

    Good luck with your punch.
