Always thought i'd support irish companies where possible, now i don't know why i bother.

I go looking for a firewire card today in compustore - what do i find when i get it home? I paid 120 euros for a cardboard box. What a bunch of idiots, i'll be in to Stephen's green tomorrow demanding a FULL refund and apology from the management. What a joke! Has anyone else ever come across such ineptitude?

Yes, every irish company, without exception is a complete joke. Id really like to name some companies that arent majorly flawed in some way but they just dont exist.

woah there ted! there are a few.. and it is completely unfair to group anyone with compustore.. they're in their own unique group..

the vat goes to the irish goverment so thats good enough for me :)

You're mad to pay 120 quid for a firewire card. Komplett have PCMCIA ones for about 30 quid and PCI ones for about 50 quid. Most of the PCI ones are also USB2.0 controllers.
They have a firewire-only PCI one for the massive sum of €17.10.

Ah come on now. One little incident and "all Irish companies are bad".

I have had very good experiences with microaid in buying computer kit. They let you know if there's going to be a delay and one particular time they even rang up wondering had I received my order as the SDS system showed up it was "in transit" - shows they were tracking the order and not just shoving it in the post and forgetting about it.

Top notch and there's lots more out there.

No, there arent. And we arent just talking about pc parts providers. Also, whoever said Elara are good should go back and try ordering a pc off them.

"No, there arent. And we arent just talking about pc parts providers. Also, whoever said Elara are good should go back and try ordering a pc off them."

Rubbish. Just recounted one company off the top of my head that I deal with a lot and they just happen to be pc related.

    OK.

I had a holiday in Galway in February and stayed in a cottage which was set in a holiday home scheme. Company that ran it were based in Kildare. Couldn't have been more helpful and the site supervisor was very friendly and welcoming too when we got there.

While in Galway had a problem with the car. Called to the main Audi dealer. One of the guys in parts department came out, took a look, got the part and fitted it and only charged for the part... VERY HELPFUL bloke and above the call of duty to have done it.

In general I find most shops/restauarants etc. to be staffed by pleasant people who do a good job. Having run my own business in Dublin and been behind the counter a lot of the time I can tell you that a big proportion of the customers are pretty bad mannered. A please, thank you , eye contact will get the best out of people no matter how badly paid the job is.

I'm not trying to be smart here just for the sake of it, but what the christ were you doing going near compustore? Anyone who has the bare minimum of clue regarding computers knows not to go near compustore, pc world, dixons and co. Just do a search on boards to find a few reasons why.

You really should have known better.

Only two things piss me off about Irish stores.

    1. Price gouging.

Nearly everything on offer tends to be at an insane price, only things on sale are at reasonable prices. I find it hard to believe our econmy is so screwed up that people would charge these prices. whats even funnier when they can't even get thier gouging right.

One example, PC Super store. I see a graphics card on sale, nice card the sale price makes it cheaper then ordering over the net.

So I bring it to the guy in the store. He messed up on an order before and said he would "Sort me out" the next time I came in.

First I have to drag him back to the shelves to show it is on sale. Then I ask him for discount as he would "Sort me out". True to his word he goes in back (probably to go pee I guess). Comes back and says he has talked to his manager and he can give me a slight discount off the price. I say fair enough.

He swipes it through the bar code reader. Apprantly (after him swiping a few times to be sure then going to ask someone) it had the wrong price on it and was in fact cheaper then the discount he gave me.

I just stared at him and though what an idiot. Asked him for a discount on that then and all I got was a quiet "no".

    Last time I shopped there.

    2. "We dont have it in Stock"

This annoys me. Your in a store you ask to look at an item, they show it to you, describe how it works, show you another, people waiting then after 10 minutes or so you say "I'll take it" and they say "Sorry its not in stock".. WTF did you bother to go through all the motions. Then you ask about another, same deal.

I got annoyed so much I cut one guy in mid sentance of explaining how the digital camera was hand crafted bv tibetian maidens for my personal pleasure only to find out that out of all the 20 so cameras he was going to explain to me only 2 were in stock (the crappiest most expensive ones).

I buy most of my stuff over the net now as it is the only place to get decent prices.

You paid €120 for a firewire card? And you're calling Compustore idiots? Companies like them get away with crap service cos of punters like you.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

Yes i realise that now - and i am eating humble pie, in that i would generally consider myself well-versed in computers!

I will be demanding a full refund tomorrow and on boards.ie this very evening i promise never to do business with them or the like again. I feel like such a fool! :( Make note: look in the box before you buy!

Does anyone think that they'll try and say that i'm trying to pull a fast one when i say that i never had the said card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭ChipZilla

It's probably sitting in a display case. They would know you're telling the truth by checking their stock levels - how many they got from their supplier versus how many they've sold versus how many are in the shop at the time. Whether they'd admit they've messed up and still have the card is another thing...

Quite competitive? Are you smoking crack or something? Or you just work for them? Two examples of their "competitive" prices:
120Gb Maxtor 6Y120L0 hard drive - €125.50. Komplett sell the (superior) 8Mb cache version of this drive for €97.28. Competitive my arse.
512Mb of "Generic" DDR400 - €192.18. No, that's not a typo. There really is a "1" after the € sign  . Komplett will sell you the same amount of Crucial-branded DDR400 for €125.84. Competitive my arse.

Yet another example of the gouging b*****ds doing business in this country... Forget supporting Irish companies. The majority of them don't deserve to stay in business if this is their idea of taking "good care of their customers ".

Shop around before you buy folks.

    shoddy Irish companies....

    one

    two

    three

    four

five - on my enemies list.

    six

    seven

    eight

    nine

    ten

And what's with Shaws, "Almost Nationwide"
I mean where else but in Ireland would companies brag about being "almost nationwide", yer either nationwide or you aren't. If you're not don't try and make yourself feel important by saying you're almost nationwide, you're almost a complete fúcking idiot.

    I left out insurance companies didn't I....

There's no need to list insurance companies.

They are all on everyones enemies list.

The only one I would argue with is #2.

Everybody slates them, complains bitterly that you land 20 miles from your destination, whinges that they don't fly on time, bitches about the airport tax and blah blah blah.

Nowhere else in the world can you fly as cheap as Ryanair. Most budget airlines will still cost you a minimum of €100 to let you on a plane at all. You will pay at least 200% extra to get..... free coffee and a free meal. Thats the most expensive tin tray of ****e you can actually get.

On Ryanair flights it costs £8 sterling for a toasted ham & cheese roll. But guess what... you get a toasted ham & cheese roll for your £8. You can actually eat it. It's not made of dog-food, rotten fish, soya proetein or any of the other mystery ****e you find in the €50 'free' tinfoil tray you get with a smile from those prettier, better dressed, better paid trolley dollies the big airlines supply.

If you're flying on a tight schedule, buy your own damn plane.

I have flown with (so far) BA, BM Aer-lingus, JAL, Lotus-Air, Lufthansa and a couple of others that I can't remember the names of.

If I'm going on a business trip, fine, let the company pay €380 to get me to Germany and back.

I have never been on a plane which started moving at the time on the ticket.

I've sat for 2 hours in a non-airconditioned lounge in Luxor, 3.5 hours (with airconditioning at least) in Crete. I've never been held up more than 40 minutes by a Ryanair flight.

And what's more, they are an Irish company who are not allowed to run their main base in Ireland, they had to go to Stanstead to expand even though they have been begging for years to be allowed build their own terminal at Dublin airport.

If you want 'frills', pay for them and good luck, there will be more of the cheap seats left for people like me.

    Hmmm....
    Now, what was I doing.....

You've clearly been doing PCP/Crystal Meth speedballs before going out for dinner/to the shops.

Most shops/restaurants (in Dublin anyway) are, thanks to the Celtic Tiger, staffed with the most unemployable dregs of humanity, as anyone who could spell their own name got jobs doing Flash programming for websites.

I'd defend Ryanair as well. They genuinely are one of the best companies operating in Ireland. Yes, they fly to bus stops rather than airports but that allows those of us that aren't loaded to go see other countries. Nearly all of my travels since I was a child and could go on family holidays have been Ryanair deals...

LOL, no I don't work for them. Your right tough they do seem pricey. It was just a coincidence that the two items I bought of them matched kompletts price so i thought it would be handier to buy from Ireland.

I'll be a little more cautious of buying from these in the future :ninja:
