Just a note to say that if your NCT renewall is due and you, like me, have'nt recived a form then phone them up.
Like the motor tax offices they've being messed up by the post only they issue all notices from Dublin so its a
nationwide problem. Also thier is a threatened strike
at NCT centres due to some disaplinary issue or other. If it happens it looks like taking place from next week.

    edit> Just found this.

    From Examiner
NCT workers strike could halt testing at 40 centres
    By Catherine Shanahan

A ROW over the use of private detectives and hidden cameras by management at the National Car Testing Service could halt testing at up to 40 centres on April 6.

The planned one-day stoppage has the potential to stall the examination of 2,800 cars, according to SIPTU, the union representing 255 of the 400 NCTS workers.

“Each of our members tests between 10 and 14 cars per day and of those we represent, 200 of them are directly involved in testing,” said trade union official Frank Jones.

The strike will also cause severe disruption to the NCTS booking line because up to 40 workers involved in the action are call centre staff who deal with bookings.

Mr Jones said a meeting of the strike committee yesterday decided workers will hold a mass meeting at NCTS head office in Citywest on April 6, followed by a demonstration outside the Dáil. However, the strike could be averted if management took on board the concerns of the union and acted accordingly, Mr Jones said.

“We are available to talk to them, it won’t take a whole lot to resolve this. We just want agreement on any future use of detectives and cameras. We understand that some companies use these methods but we want a commitment from NCTS management that they won’t use cameras or detectives anymore without our agreement.”

Two workers were dismissed by the NCTS following investigations by PIs using cameras. An employee at the Naas centre was fired for “irregularities” such as testing cars out of sequence.

Mr Jones, who was shown a videotape used by management in the case against the dismissed mechanic, said he believed it contained no evidence against the man, who is not even seen in the video. The man has taken his case to the Rights Commissioner. Another worker dismissed by the NCTS will get a tribunal hearing next month. Mr Jones said there had been 10 other unfair dismissal cases, nine of which the union had won.

NCTS management could not be contacted for comment last night.

    Mike.

The test can also be booked by email ( bookings@nct.ie ) i think, see the website to be sure). I did this yesterday. You will get a confirmation of receipt of your email but it's taking them about a day to come back with the date and time of the test.
