Well, im not knowlegable in this area of the smoking ban, but i was listening to the radio and they were saying that herbal ciggies are still legal in pubs and work places!

There are also loopholes (which i dont know) - something like the one in texas; if you wear a belt thats less than an inch thick you can beat your wife during the weekend before noon.

Well, these herbal smokes that are being released are apparently still legal in all public places.

Clear this up with me: is there is also a law that says you cannot smoke within 20 feet of property containing people? and i hear the government are trying to bring this into government property too. So that means smoking will be a private issue?

ASAIK you can still smoke herbal cigarettes, you just cannot smoke tobacco!

I am a smoker and this sounds completely silly to me, herbal cigarettes produce smoke and can potientally damage a bar workers (or whoever) health, ok the smoke may not be as bad as the smoke from a cigarette but it's still smoke right? am I wrong here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,581 ✭✭✭uberwolf

AFAIK ciggeratte smoke contains over 3000 chemicals to aid the smoking, only a 10th have been tested, of which a third were carcinogenic. I'd imagine a lot of these chemicals aren't present in herbal ciggarettes. Still stupid though.

I have no link though to back this up.

Did a quick search on google and first result that came up was this one

    http://www.quackwatch.org/02ConsumerProtection/FTCActions/herbalcigarettes.html

basically, the manufacturers of the herbal cigs in question were brought to task for marketing them as safe. FTC rule that there is no such thing as a safe smoke

It is true that herbal cigarettes aren't covered. It does seem extremely odd that for a law passed to protect workers, the ability to still smoke herbal cigarettes leaves things open for legal challenges still.

So if you smoke in a pub and management approaches you, you can claim it's a herbal cigarette? It's easy enough to cut a cig so the name isn't shown and it could look like a herbal cigarette then.

There is something in the new legislation about the fact that publicans etc can't claim ingnorance of someone smoking herbal cigarettes. ie they thought that Jimmy was smoking a herbal cigarette. Can anyone clarify?

Also, in the times today, they ran a grey box highlightinh key points of the new legislation. Anyone found guilty pays a E3000 fine. However, they failed to say who the guilty party was, the smoker or the proprietor, again, can anyone clarify?

the pub gets a fine of 3000 euro and the person smoking also gets a fine but im not sure how much!!! also what i like about this is the fact that if the barman asks you to put out the cigerette and you refuse it will be dealt as un socialable behaviour ie being drunk

Have you ever smoked a herbal cigarette? They taste like AIDS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

    They taste like AIDS.

    LOL :D

I'll give them a shot anyways.

There was an entire episode plotline from The Paper Chase (classic TV from my very young youth) dedicated to this. In the end, the rebellious students stoped smoking the not-banned herbal mixtures as they tasted like crap. Skip a few stages and just jump to the conclusion - you'll be glad you did.

You know what would be really funny imo... getting a bunch of people together to go to a pub and just burn herbal ciggies :)

Im not talking 3 or 4, i mean organise a shitload of people to just take over a pub and smoke herbal ciggies - so what if they taste like shit - it would wreck all the 'YOU CANT SMOKE HERE' people's heads :)

    That would be funny.

    FIGHT THE POWER!

Just like those spontaneous gatherings where people would arrive at a certain place at a certain time and do something funny and then just disappear again.

Sounds like a good idea. It would make the headlines alright!

years ago when i was in secondary school this crazy kid in my year showed up with tons of packs of herbal cigs , he claimed he'd stolen a whole box of them.

After trying them, we all realised that there is a greater evil than smoking, and that's smokin that absolute ****e. it made even the hardest smokers gag.

lt tasted like sick, or rotting something.

this was mentioned on the 6'oclock news, the health/safety spokeswoman said something like publicans were within their rights to ban all cigarettes on their premises, just like they can ban activities such as card playing.

so i guess it wud be in publicans best interests to ban all cigs, to avoid the legal nightmare of the whole 'he said they were just herbal and they smelled like mint!'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,148 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

You can smoke as many Herbal ass Tasting ciggies all ya like, infact come along and sit beside me and see if I care :) Hell I love ciggies. I couldnt give two real tosses about the ban but I do get great entertainment out of the fun and games that are going on.

There is a reason Herbal Ciggies went into decline ;)

By the same token, anyone working in an Irish embassy abroad can no longer smoke on the premises because it's considered Irish territory.

Had a hebal ciggie the other day. Skanky stuff.
Wouldnt mind them in the long run methinks.
I heard that they have tar and no nicotine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Frank Grimes

Why would you want to smoke those things even if it is legal?
They have no nicotine in them and smell/taste like crap.
Last time I saw someone smoking one of those in a pub, they were sitting at the bar and the barman said to the girl "either put that out or sit somewhere else". He wasn't joking either.
I can imagine most barstaff taking the same line too :)

There is no Cuban embassy in Ireland. muppets. I'm sure they can fly to England to make a point, or open up a private club (it is only public places you can't smoke).

As for herbal ciggies, they are illegal too. Someone let me know when they plan to do it though as I want to watch the cops listen to your excuses. :)

TBH they should make smoking herbal ciggies the punishment.

    ...

Don't know about that. Where I work you couldn't smoke inside anyway. They had a smoking shack outside. Now with the new laws they have to remove that shack. They are allowed make a smoking area outside of the building but it must only have two walls or it would be classed as a room.

Yup, I'm sure it's pretty hard to prove to a ticked off bouncer that it's a herbal smoke.

and I'm sure the smoke alarms will be able to tell the difference ...

hum ... it's also not agaist theban to burn feathers... that really stinks and I'm sure I'd get chucked out if I did that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

Herbal smokes are rotten and seeing as there's no nicotine in them I don't see the point!
Plus, if you want to get some you'd better hurry up, The asssociation of pharmacists have decided to stop selling Herbal cigarettes in all Chemist's throughout the country as they still contain tar and are therefore just as damaging as ordinary cigs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,946 ✭✭✭red_ice

Excellent, im glad to see you all hate herbal smokes more than normal ones :D

Ill be stocking up on them just to annoy those whiny people who wanted smoking stopped.

Now that we have established that herbal smokes tase like a mixture of 'aids, jockstraps, ass, cock, and other foul stuff' can we try another angle on this matter?

p.s. how do these people know what aids, jockstraps, ass, cock and such tastes like?

um that and you can usualy get a good idea what things taste like from smelling them...
that does'nt really sound mucch better though.

Heard on my local Highland Radio in Donegal. The Chief Environmental Health Officer for the North Western Health Board Region stated in relation to the smoking of "Herbal cigarettes" that Quote;- " Under the new legislation even cigarette paper and or filters are also illegal. "Therefore smoking herbal cigs would be deemed illegal".

Wonderful country Eh  Personally I believe the real backlash will start when smokers get fed up with the current novelty factor and that should take only about a week, before the real arguements and frustration emerge.

Have a nice day, and I cannot wait for the next local and national election.

    Yours,

    P. :ninja: Thoroughly pissed off, and I do not even smoke anymore

If someone comes up with a herbal cig that tastes like a normal cig they will make
    a fortune...

Im sure in this day and age with science the way it is, there is a way to create a very
    similar taste chemically...

Personally Im glad that the smoking ban came in as there is nothin worse than
coming home stinking of smoke from a pub or restaurant...

What was to stop them mixing dope with regular cigs before?

Herbal cigs smell worse than regular ones, you probably wouldn't notice the smell of the hash because the "tobacco" smells so strong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

It's also hard to find herbal cigs, especially since the Irish Pharmacy Association has recommended to all it's members NOT to sell them.

Isn't the ban great ??? We can now have a good night without the stink of smoke.

    Herbal are indeed yuck.
On the plus side it's possible to smoke tea, so you could try that. I recommend using the filter bag to roll a filture though cause it's pretty strong.

Honestly though if you find yourself needing a fix....the anser is snuff. It contains loads of vitamin N and it's not smoking. Plus you get that cool brown snot for a few days, just make sure you throw your tissues at the bottom of the dustbin.:D

    Smoking tea leaves is EVIL!!!

I was dared to do it once and will never forget it...

From now on, the tea leaves stay in a bag, inside a mug... with hot water and a bit of milk....

    Jafar,

Re; " The answer is Snuff ". I like that suggestion, unfortunately it also - afaik - is a carcinogen. Apparently it attacks the nasal passages and the throat and lungs etc.

It might be better if those contemplating this alternative too smoking cigarettes, sought out some professional medical advice as a first step.

I well remember when I was a boy. A lot of adults used Snuff regularly as it contained nicotine, but it seems to have gone out of fashion, although still available. It was also used as a sort of cure all for different ailments.

    Interesting. :)
