Need advice on firstly whether the Catholic church would object to having a gospel choir sing in the church for a wedding?

And if not, can anyone recommend a good choir for the occasion??
Not a huge choir now as this is going to be very small wedding..

    Thanks!!

Head to www.joannacampbellgriffin.com. She's a sopranon that specialises in wedding singing, I'm sure she'd be able to point you in the right direction if not sort you out with a choir herself...

Gardiner street church have a gospel choir, no seriously.
I saw a programme on them on the tele.
you should go and have a listen to see if they are any good, afaik they do half eleven mass on sunday, and according to the prog, give you tea and biccies after :D.
They were quite good on the tele.

its not up to the chuch, its up to you - you can have anything in the wedding you want. and why would the church mind anyway?

Completely incorrect. The priest can veto any music he likes. Basically anything that's not considered to be "sacred music" by the priest is out unless he decides that he'll allow it.

It's 7:30 on a sunday and they're very good... the majority of their repetoire are modern & contemporary songs, with a slight gospel edge... well worth seeing as the mass itself is not standard fare so thats usually quite interesting too (note this is coming from someone who is not at all religious).

ferdi, it may be his wedding, but as far as the priest is concerned, it's his church.

Yup, that amazing Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sing at the Gospel Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin 1 every Sunday evening(September to June) at 7:30pm, but if you want a seat you usually have to be in 5 mins or so beforehand for the good seats. The church is more often then not packed.
Just to mention, they'll be taking next Sunday off after Easter.
    Free tea and biscuits after.
It's an excellent Mass, quite differant to your usual Mass, an awful lot of effort seems to go into preparation.
The music is powerful, good selection of songs, from U2, Macy Gray, Sting, Van Morrison, Whitney Houston, Mary Mary, Primal Scream, Bill Withers and many more. Great voices in it.
They won The AIMS Choral Festival Gospel Competition twice and came 2nd once, in the three times that they had competed. They have featured on Nationwide, The Late Late Show, the Joe Duffy Christmas Eve Radio Show on Grafton St. last year.
You can hear them on Morning Glory, RTE Radio One through a link here: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/weekend/morningglory/MG081103.html (scroll ahead to the fifth minute of the show).
They have a CD, "One Love", available from good music stores nationwide.
They filled The Ambassador Theatre last November, the O'Reilly Theatre over two nights in 2002 and packed out Vicar St. in March with Dublin Gospel Choir. Some pics from that gig are here: http://gardiner.kickme.to
They are, it appears, going to be the subject of a Would You Believe documentary on RTE 1 towards the end of April, keep an eye out for that!
    Their website is www.gardinerstreetgospel.com

Oh, by the way, I don't think they do weddings anymore. They're too busy and are constantly asked, so in order not to send out confusing signals they have adopted a blanket "no-weddings" policy. I guess the same applies for funerals, bar mitzvas, etc. Sorry.
