This show was actually first on a few months ago,so,er,welcome to February:)
Anyway,if you watch MTV Base often you probably saw the programme where viewers voted,in order of preference, the top 22 rappers. The list went

    22. Chuck D
    21. Method Man
    20. Queen Latifah
    19. LL Cool J
    18. Foxy Brown
    17. Common
    16. Snoop Dogg
    15. KRS-ONE
    14 Run-DMC
    13 DMX
    12 Nelly
    11. Bug Pun
    10. Missy Elliot
    9. Beastie Boys
    8. Lil Kim
    7. Dr. Dre
    6. Rakim
    5. Jay-Z
    4. Nas
    3. Eminem
    2. Biggie
    1. Tupac

Just wondering, whats yer opinions? A good, reflective list? Or American nobheads voting for thebiggest record seller?
As for mein opinion,if ye care, which you may not......
    22. Chuck D-I dunno, tbh I never liked public enemy much, thought they were overrated
    21. Method Man-Aye,deserves to be in the list
    20. Queen Latifah- Never paid much attention to her
    19. LL Cool J -Same
    18. Foxy Brown -Same
    17. Common -Have none of his stuff
    16. Snoop Dogg -He fell off harder than the world trade centre collapsing after doggystyle, but because of the sheer quality of that album, and the chronic,Id put him among my top 5 or so
    15. KRS-ONE -Ive heard alot about him,but know little of his stuff tbh. Nowhere in Ireland sells his stuff it would seem, and Ive no credit card to be buying online, but Ill take peoples word for it
    14 Run-DMC -Alright,I suppose,not huge on old skool really
13 DMX -Has some god lyrics and alot of energy
12 Nelly -His first album had a few good tracks. However,a series of brutal singles from his second have lowered my opinion of him
    11. Big Pun -Ive got Yeaah Baby lying round lost somewhere in my room, never gave it a proper listen tbh
    10. Missy Elliot -Geddoutofit. She has some brutal lyrics and these days she seems to be targeting the American house/dance music market more than rap
    9. Beastie Boys -Tbh I never really regarded them as rappers. They always sort of annoyed me tbh
    8. Lil Kim -Not arsed
    7. Dr. Dre- Best producer ever, and not a bad rapper, even if he doesnt write all his own lyrics his producing talents compensate for it
    6. Rakim -Same as KRS One,nobody in Ireland seems to sell his stuff. Ive liked the few album cuts I heard though
    5. Jay-Z -FCUK OFF. Surely the man who gives rap a bad name to non fans. He is such a fecking stereotype rapper-all he seems to ramble about is selling crack, bitches and how much money, cars, boats and cristal he has round the house. Grade A buffoon. Despite popular opinion I class him as one of the weakest lyricists in the industry. Why the hell are the likes of new, southern rappers like Chingy getting so much bad reviews for rapping about the same things Jay Z has rapped about for years to critical acclaim. Anybody could come up with a typical Jay Z verse in two minutes. All you need mention are the words hove, hova, crack, hoe and projects. He shouldnt be on the list at all
    4. Nas - Brilliant lyricist, and hasnt majorly fallen off like most who have been round as long as him
    3. Eminem -Undeniably a deadly lyricist. Recent stuff not as good, but still, what a genius
    2. Biggie -Best lyricist ever bar none . Beats Tupac hands down tbh
    1. Tupac -He was good, but tbh when it comes to lyrical quality he wouldnt probably make my top 5. The only time he outshone Biggie was on Hit Em Up,which in fairness was a brilliant diss. Popular idiotic opinion wins out again against the best talent.

    So,whats yer view?

Queen Latifah? Fs, not even worth commenting on tbh

    22. Chuck D - Deserves place higher than 22.

    21. Method Man - GZA tbh.

    20. Queen Latifah - Female hip hop pioneer, merits place

    19. LL Cool J - GOAT maybe not, but should be in the list.

    18. Foxy Brown - Not a fan.

    17. Common - A higher place deserved.

    16. Snoop Dogg - Maybe at 22, purely for Doggystyle but he cant keep riding on the success of it and colaborations

    15. KRS-ONE - Higher place.

14 Run-DMC - Hip Hop pioneers again. Earned their place.

    13 DMX - No

    12 Nelly - Hell no

    11. Bug Pun - Not bad, but not a big fan of hispanic rappers bar Cypress Hill

    10. Missy Elliot - Innovative, brought a good bit to the genre, shouldn't be ranked so high

    9. Beastie Boys - Earned place.

    8. Lil Kim - who? Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.

    7. Dr. Dre - As a producer yes, as a rapper no.

    6. Rakim - Earned place.

    5. Jay-Z - No, well maybe 20 - 22 but 5? I think not.

    4. Nas - Illmatic, fantastic album, Stillmatic and God's Son very good, forget the rest. Top 4 fair place.

    3. Eminem - Turned the genre on it's head. Great lyricist. No. 3 - maybe after a few more solid albums.

    2. Biggie - Lyrically great. Good delivery, put east coast hip hop back on the map.

    1. Tupac - Good yes, # 1 no.

    1. Biggie
    2. Nas
    3. KRS-One
    4. Rakim
    5. Eminem
    6. A Tribe Called Quest
    7. De La Soul
    8. Common
    9. Chuck D
    10. Aesop Rock
    11. Tupac
    12. Guru
    13. Gift of Gab
    14. LL Cool J
    15. Beasties
    16. Run DMC
    17. GZA
    18. Queen Latifah
    19. Snoop Dogg
    20. Missy Elliot

Now I know I've left some out, and the order is a bit rough, but a better top 20(why 22?) imo.

There's a few people in there that shouldn't be. But i'd say the real list is made up higher up (10 upwards - but I would include beasties)

Most of the list though seems to be for the MTV viewers who just watch MTV1 or MTV Base. I think some of the well deserving artists in that list were probably going to be left out for more main stream (pop) rappers.

MTV viewers who just watch MTV1 or MTV Base.

What did you expect with an MTV list?
Look at one of their Metal or Rock top 20's, it'll still be based on sales with maybe a splattering of well known, good, classic bands.
    Basically, MTV Sucks.

I like Makaveli's list, I wouldn't agree on everything, but it seems like a solid list with artists that deserve their place on skill etc, rather then just on how many albums they sold.

I find he has an incredibly annoying voice though.
It puts me off him. Not that what he writes isnt good, he's a good emcee, very good delivery and lyrical ability, but an annoying as fuck voice.

Basically, MTV can make or break rappers themselves.

^^^ only mainstream rappers whose main fans are 14 year old suburban MTV watching ghetto wannabee teeny boppers
