How come no Hendrix though? Surely 'Voodoo Chile' would be the ultimate tune?

Seems like most of the tunes (Bobby Fuller 4, The Count 5 etc) are the ones you find on those crappy 'Eternal Summer Surf Party' type tapes you used to get in filling stations, so I guess they must be out of copyright or something?

This is what I assumes. But when I had mu custom playlist playing online, anyone else who played a song, it played the vietnam song, and not the corresponding song in my playlist.

Hendrix was opposed to the war in vietnam, like most people of his generation. Hence the little snag over licensing the music. It's a great game, but I can't help feeling that its a little too soon after the shameful vietnam war to be making light of it.

True, but for many years, the Vietnam war was taboo for a lot of Americans, and still is; the whole "you weren't there man" psycho vietnam vet is lampooned lots, but this generation's dads are the ones that went to war there.
It was a nasty war, and by the games own admission, wasn't a clear good vs. bad war.

The holocaust isn't taboo, it's widely documented and talked about; people just dont make jokes about it, and you sure as hell can't/wouldnt make a game out of it. It's a horrible piece of history that people just leave as be.
But ww2 in general had pretty clearly defined ideas of good vs. evil, right vs. wrong, it wasn't a question of destruction or numbers of deaths - it was the point of the war in the first place, a hangover war from ww1, but still one born out of conquest of tyranny. </melodramatic>

Vietnam was a messy war, and although america officially "won" the war, the human cost in terms of bodies and psychologically was pretty high. Plus if you read the loading screens in BF-V, the 60s were also a period of social reform, where the ideas of "government knows best" were finally knocked down and personal freedom came to a new height. The war in S-E asia represented everythign again those notions.

Oh and DC is slightly dodgy now with the second Gulf war biting the US wholey in the ass. It's quickly turning into another vietnam, and god only knows what the "gulf war syndrome" part 2 will be

They never really "won" the war. They just came to an agreement with the NVA. A cease-fire was signed in Paris by enry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho at the beginning of 1974 that was to go into effect on January 28. The drafting of civilians into the Army was then ended and troops began to leave Vietnam. However in 1974 the NVA started the war again. Nixon was impeached for bombing Cambodia and resigned. At the end of 1974 the NVA made a massive offensive. So in reality the US just got up and left without a true ass kicking, getting out before they could actually be beaten... cheaky feckers.

Agreed, but talking to the average american boards junkie in the past (usually erupting from "france sucks" threads), the common perception(misconcepton) is that america "won" the war based on it's official engagements (iirc, most of their official deployments were successful?). course that these people are jittery pubescents with gunlust has nothing to do with it

The American involvement in the Vietnam/Indochina [as a whole] conflict was quite an interesting thing to read upon. The American Arsenal was totally overwhelming and modern. The Vietnam war saw the first use of helicopters as part of the battlefield, moving in troops, resupplies, Playboy bunnies and evacuating the wounded and dead. They proved so vital and useful that helicopters now play an important part in every conflict since then. The US had the newly built F4-Phantom jet which was supiorer to the NVA/Chineese/Russian Mig counterpart. The introduction of Napalm as a bomb for aeroplanes [remember, the US used Napalm back in ww2 for flame throwers] also provided a devistaing weapon against troops, and proved better then just bombs. The M60 and M16, once upgraded proved very useful and on a par with the NVA AK-47 counterpart, the origional M16 had jamming problems which were sorted with upgrades. Hwever, the AK-47 was a better infantry weapon due to its agility and durability, although was not as accurate at longer distances due to its shorter barrell over the M16.

In open battles the Americans would nearly always beat the NVA. Their overwhelming arsenal and available firepower would destroy the NVA. Where open battles were concerned the US would win. However, the NVA had the upper hand outside of this. The NVA had an execptual knowledge of the Jungle and could move through US lines undetected. The NVA could easily wipe out the US Army when in the jungle, where the US couldnt use their firepower to its fullest. The extreme dicipline of the NVA troops made this possible. The US troops, as you know were lead astray by "pesonal R&R" and many who were drafted in didnt want to fight at all. Many were fighting for a cause they didnt believe in, the changing of society in America at the time.

Now, im going to actually stop typing and shut up. This is not the thread for my history rambling. So, back to music. EA should have paid that bit more for some Hendrix and Doors. Although they didnt support the War, they were a vital part of the war and the social change going on in America at the time. Hendrix was an anthem for many soilders in the Vietnam war.

You sure? Star Spangled Banner was the only real affront to the war that Hendrix made, Im running other songs through my head, and none of them strike as being anthems against the war, and much of his stuff was very blues oriented.

anyways - any arguement in regards the game being unappropriate shouldn't be leaning toward sympathy for the americans who lost insignificant numbers of personnel compared to the vast numbers of Vitnameese civilians who were killed, one third of a holocaust by WW2 standards, and God knows how many were affected by agent orange etc after the war years. I admit the NVA/VC probably were responsible for a good portion of these deaths, but the fact is the USA had no right to even be there in the first place.
