Great name. Really encourages you to take what she is saying seriously. We're probably not meant to take it seriously though.
"Smoking and drinking go hand in hand and I believe that a night out in the pub is an integral part of Irish culture"

For you maybe muppet, but not for everyone. I can certainly drink without smoking. I only gave in to one form of peer pressure! ;)

If pubs and clubs were legally obliged to install proper smoke extraction ventilation systems, then maybe I wouldn't care if the ban was dropped. But they aren't and even if they were they wouldn't.

I hate the smell of my clothes coming home from the pub. I smell like an extra from London's Burning. It's disgusting.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

as far as i know it was proven that even the best ventilation doesnt do enough... and as you said, even if they had to, they would arse about getting them installed, we'd all be dead (be it smoke related or not) by the time they did sort it out.

Nah, all for it mesmelf, and ditto on the smell of my clothes.... its annoying... cos i cant wear them the next day then!!;)

I hear ya barking Flogen. :)

I feel real sorry for the people who work in bars. Within 2 minutes of entering a pub/club my throat goes and my voice gets all hoarse. And they have to work in that kind of environment.

I'd say they can't wait for next week.

You should really see a doctor then, that shouldn't happen to a healthy person. No matter how much lingering second hand smoke there is in your local.

Lodgepole, it was a bit of an exagerration. Maybe 15 minutes! But I have messed up sinuses, so that's why it happens.

I'm just surprised the government actually stuck to their guns and didn't give in to the pressure from the powerful lobby groups looking for the ban to be abolished.

    I don't envy you Garth_Vader. Things might/will get nasty.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

they knew well that the majority of Irish people supported them and it would mean some hope of votes (we might forget about the 1000 other things they pissed up)

also if they did back down after being so certain theyd look like idiots, they had to be subborn about it, and thank god for that

It has been. A group in Sydney released a report only about a fortnight ago.

Its not just about the fact that smoking will (finally) be banned in pubs. Its the fact we never had a right to choose. Nobody asked us if we wanted a smoking ban and when it comes in, nobody will ask us if we want people kicked out of pubs for smoking.

Its not fair, its not democratic.

Maybe cigarettes will get the full chop (finally) who am I to say. There seems to be an increasing aversion to it, as there should be.

The fact is, if that website is correct and 42% of Irish people are smokers and 65% of nightclub go-ers are smokers then I seriously doubt it that this is what the majority of the Irish people want.

Thats what you should be signing it for, not because you're for or against smoking but because you're against removing our right to choose.

It’s the states job to protect its citizens this ban is doing just that

I think someone's added about 10 percentage points to the real figures while someone wasn't looking.

    I am a smoker
    I am not smoker
    I'm an ex smoker
    None of the above

What the hell does "None of the above" apply to?

    Nice domain name, though.

(She hasn't a hope of getting 50,000 signatures this late in the game. Even if she does, the government isn't going to back down. Roll on next Monday!)

From my experience of nightclubs, that's utter sh1te. I imagine that either the figures are blatant lies or just misleading - it's probable that 65% of nightclub go-ers have smoked, or would smoke on occasion in a nightclub, rather than are bona fide smokers. Either way, polls all point to a support for the ban and that includes any smoking friend that I've spoken to....

As to that website - I find the actual name as offensive of the content. I can just hear the mangled use of English in my head. Who designed it - Deco?

Here here. The general way of thinking about the ban among smokers I know is that it'll give them some incentive to give up.

Report the junk mail to their ISP and hosting company, maybe they'll think twice about spamming me again?

um it could just a easly be showing that some people who dont smoke are'nt going to night clubs because of the smoke...
and as non smokers are in the majority the night club would make more money with more nonsmokers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Ste.phen

    I agree with some of that;
i know that as a non smoker i avoid going out to pubs/clubs in favor of house parties because the smell is never nearly as bad and I dont usually have to worry about choking my guts up (i'm athsmatic, by the way).

But the other point, that non smokers have more money to spend in pubs, is a little off i think.
Surely people who are both non smokers and serious enough to not drink in pubs often becasue of it would also be drink more moderately?

(ppst. dont tell teh VFI, they'll implement a 20% price rise across the board to make up for that)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 121 ✭✭Humphrey

Well done Ivan I agree with your comments 100% and that is why I am against the ban even though I am a non smoker and frequent smokey pubs regularly.

On the point of ventilation I can notice a hugh difference in pubs with good and bad systems in place (or non at all).

What will this government TELL us we cant do next, eat Fast Food, drink over 6 pints per night......

    Humphrey.

Lads... let's have a look at the bigger picture...

I mean, what about all those heroin addicts and their rights?

Personally, I'd prefer to see them shooting up and getting their buzz in a pub, at least they're not doing me any harm. :)

And all the poor cocaine addicts? I mean their most basic human rights are being affected! They can't even snort up on the bar, or the workplace, or the bus.. well, actually they'll probably get away with it on the bus..

I think the nicotine/tar addicts should stop discriminating other groups, they've enjoyed special treatment for years, and it's about time they get treated equally! :D

First off it is NOT an all out "SMOKING BAN" .. its a Smoking ban in the WORKPLACE , and secondly the % figures quoted should be polled from the workers ... I doubt many Bar Staff like working in smoky pubs with very little fresh air etc....

Face it there will be no smoking in the workplace from March 29th .. a Good thing IMO

Does that mean they can spam us about it? (yes i took it personally)

And on the same note, we're trying to stop something we believe in, people setting up stupid petitions :P

As publicans are saying they will have great difficulty in implementing the ban in pubs or not observing it at all we have come up with a cunning plan. Light up a joint and see how long it takes them to tell ya to put it out ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭netman

erm... why is there so much hype about this smoking ban?
i mean it's not going to be enforced anyway.. look at what's happening with all the other laws in ireland.

it's illegal to use a mobile phone while driving, yet every day i see people using their phones while driving. i've never ever seen anyone getting fined for that. and i've never heard of anyone being fined either.

it's just one example of so many laws in this country that are just not being enforced. i guess the gardai are only interested in you paying your tax, so as long as your box of cigarettes has the little tax sticker on it you should be fine. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭egan007

All these pro smoke people - including the author of this site has obviously never lost a mother / father / family member to cancer caused by cigaretts.

I never in all my life seen such a pack of whingers.

It is not illegal to use a phone in the car - there is no law yet

People don't smoke in busses (except scumbags) or hospitals - nobody enforces it - it's just out of respect for other people - and oh...it's the law - and people ar following it

it's not only on busses you find scumbags

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭netman

that's not quite my understanding of it.

on the 19th of march 2002 the minister for the department of the environment and local government introduced regulations under the road traffic act 1961, which has been further clarified in may 2002.

these regulations are fully operational, but not enforced (surprise, surprise).

the really funny thing is that you're not legally allowed to have a phone switched on anywhere on your person while driving. so if you have a mobile phone in your pocket while driving and it's switched on, you're breaking the law.. but.. the gardai are not allowed to search you for a possession of a mobile phone. this can only be done if there's evidence that you're in possession of drugs or an offensive weapon. guess they haven't really thought that one through, but the lunch break was approaching fast :)

Well considering that Ireland is now a kind of "test bed" or other countries to see if the smoking ban works, all eyes are to Ireland so to speak. Don’t you think the government would look a bit of a fool in the international community if they backed down on this at such a late stage?

Anyway I’m pro the ban (as a smoker of sorts). i hate going into smoky pubs. it sucks :(
