Is it just me.. or does anyone else think that female comedians are just not funny??? I cannot think of a female comedian that is as funny as the worst male comedian!!!

Its a discussion that I've had with mates before and we couldn't really think of any... just after watching Ed Byrne's 'just for laughs' there this evening... the preview for next week was focused on comediennes.... sorry it just wasnt funny...

    your views please....

    who say what now?

i believe you were refering to the use of the word 'comediennes'....

this is the female plural version of 'comedian'

ppl who gets their kicks from pointing out spelling mistakes are idiots.
Those who get their kicks from using words like comediennes are worse :)

Your right though. Never seen a comedienne that i remember now.

never saw a comedienne! but stand-up isn't all that funny anyway, quite often any1 could write the material it's the wa it's delivered that makes the difference

Well... there's Jo Brand - she's quite funny...
Dawn French & Jennifer Saunders - not as funny as they used to be though
And those girls from Smack the Pony - dunno their names... can't think of any more right now

    eh....Whoopi Goldberg
    Victoria Wood
I think Roseanne did standup before TV

I'm sure there's loads more around. Some i found quite good, but their names escape me. Certainly no one from Ireland...unfortunately

    EDIT: Wait now.....Lily Savage? :D

All they every talk about are periods. not funny, especially Jo Brand.

What? Deirdre O'Kane is catagorically spectacularly unfunny.

I had the misfortune to be at the comedy club in Galway, (GPO-back in the day).
When Tommy Tiernan (who was a bit of a hero around Galway at the time) was compere one night and he brought her along.

Now Galway being Galway, nobody could really be arsed about heckling (only tourists did that), essentially the audience, if they didn't like someone would just ignore them, talk among themselves, go to the bar, shout orders from the seats, not laugh and basically pass the time until the stand-up died.

O'kane died because she was so useless. That what she gets for thinking she was funny enough to go on stage. Saw her a while later on television and she was still crap, Tommy gave out to us later for being a bunch of pricks, (but that was funny).

    Women comedians.....avoid

Well said, lock thread since it's a well known axiom of the universe :D

I fairness all UK&Irish Male standups are ****e too, all they ever talk about is situations with their girlfriends, it's true.
American and Canadian ones are more abstract and imaginative...

You idiots have it AAAALLLLLL wrong: deirdre o kane is the definition of unfunny, Rosanne, Jo Brand, Smack the Pony, Ab Fab - ALL SH*TE. Terrible, terrible attempt at comedy.
I can see why shallow people would fall for it and think it's funny; but on closer inspection - it's very crap.

And "Third_Echelon", did you get this idea from my post here?

Comediennes seem to think that by being loud and talking repreatedly about periods, they are funny. Not!

First against the wall when the revolution comes..

I agree. Jo Brand was mildly amusing, but other than that, I can't think of any funny female comediennes.

On the other hand, I don't know any men with nice breasts.

most stand up comedians and Comediennes are crap, they are just full of worn out forced gags*

the main exceptions are the greats such as billy connolly and jasper carrot

*see most of the people preforming on ed byrnes 'just for laughs'

as a member of the fairer sex, i would normally feel obliged to support my fellow ladies but i must draw the line here.

i have seen a fair few comedy gigs in my time and have never seen a comedienne that made me laugh. no exception. reckon ive seen 10-15 so far. dont get me wrong, im not writing women off but ive yet to be impressed.

    billy connolly is the king.

jason byrne is amazing too. not on tv tho, live. hes a few sandwiches short of a picnic but once he gets going...its beautiful...effortless. some people were born to do it, others werent so lucky.:dunno:

also...deirdre o kane is as crap as the mayor of crapville riding a crap bicycle, wearing a crap hat... on national crap day.

give me a comedian any day, most comediennes suck, some of em crack me up though, i saw a black comedienne previewed on an episode of just for laughs last night, shes on the show next monday shes fúckin hilarious.

Victoria Wood is great but more of an actress, there arent many straightfoward stand-up comics who are wimmin. I cant remember her name but there's one good english comic whos is in her 30s and blond. She's been on Have I Got News For You and other satirical stuff.

    Mike.

    WHAT!!???!!

    thats just wrong.

irish comedians are some of the best in the world. ed byrne and tommy tiernan are two of the funniest people ive ever heard. and raphael is totally right billy connolly is a genius. Americans and canadians MAY be more abstract but more often than not they are completely unfunny.

but staying on topic, i've never seen a funny comedienne.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,898 ✭✭✭✭seanybiker

Billy connolly is class, and whoever said tommy tiernen is bad must be mad, i seen him twice, had to bring a nappy the second time , fairly embarassed after wetting meself the first time.

no... never read that thread... t'was just something i was talking about one night with a few mates...

from all the names mentioned so far.. there is none that i would class as funny doing stand up... deirdre o kane is insanely terrible... even here voice... ahhh... have to say though that she did play here character well in intermission... maybe she should stick to that end of the entertainment industry.....

I have to see Billy Connolly before he stops touring.... I just have to... he is the funniest man.... its just so simple the stuff that he rants on about, but its also his delivery and style.... Billy da man....

This thread got me thinkin for a second or three, and I can't honestly remember any female person ever making me laugh by being funny on purpose. I'm talking about real life and tv and whatever else there is out there. Women tend to laugh at anything even close to being half a mile from being funny, especially when the joke is told by a male person. Men on the other hand, unless intoxicated, usually need the joke or situation to be genuinely funny or stupid-funny before they laugh at said joke.

    :dunno:

Oh, Comediennes....Just Not Funny = TRUE

Female comedians just talk about shopping, being thirty and no sign of marriage and their periods. Come on, wtf is funny about that? Whereas men have a much more warped sense of humour and touch upon the taboo, like dead babies in clown suits.

Ellen DeGeneres is a brilliant stand-up comic. But she's a lesbian so I suppose she doesn't count as a 'female comic'.

And stop slagging off Deirdre O'Kane. She's gorgeous.

    def comedy jam..

some of the black women were hilarious i thought

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

In general, there are few good comedians. There are much less comediennes than comedians ergo it seems like there's no such thing.

Granted I had to think for a minute before responding to this but Ellen Degenres is a decent stand up act, Whoopi Goldberg used to be fantastic (interesting fact: she introduced Billy Connolly in the states), Deirdre O' Kane has her moments but in general is just below par...

It must be said though: Jo Brand is NOT funny. Never was, never will be!

Deirdre o' Kane was in intermission right....was she ment to be funny, cos everytime she was on i felt like smashing the dvd to bits.... Ed Burn used to be funny.. but when ever i see him on tv he just aint funny any more..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

I find that in general, most comedians these days are only funny in small doses.
Mr. William Connolly being the one exception.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,017 ✭✭✭Altheus

Smack the Pony's alright, although probably wrong category.

Comediennes tend to be cheaps laughs, show me the female Bill Hicks and I will eat my hat.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭alleepally

After watching that episode of Just for Laughs with the wimmin I think I laughed only once or twice and that was the black women during the interview with Ed Byrne. She was funny but her stage act was ****e.

Her beautiful visage was the only thing that made that rubbish bearable. Deirdre, if you're reading - get in touch.

I would rather saw my own arm off than listen to a long drawn out tale from Victoria Wood, God I'm so annoyed right now even thinking about her, she is an imposter, just like Whoopi.

I hate them I hate them all, except blonde girl from Alan Partridge(behind desk in travel tavern) and Hippies. She is quite funny and a bit sexy, mmmm.
