I hope this hasn't been posted already but the Sunday Business Post did an article on Aer Lingus's decision to ban iPods and various other gadgets.

    http://www.thepost.ie/web/DocumentView/did-624053583-pageUrl--2FMisc-2FBusiness-Resources-2FComputers-In-Business.asp

This story was also reported on http://www.ipodlounge.com by the way, I'm not familiar with the technicalities of Aviation equipment but can an iPod really interfere with the electronics on a plane? Is it the hard drive or what?

And for christ sake why are Gameboy's banned, I know there bloody annoying on a plane but what is the technical reason for banning them?

    Anyhoo, please do comment.

Has a plane ever crashed because of someone listening to a cd?
I've used cd players on planes years ago and mp3 players and mini disks all the tim when I'm on planes..

i wonder what they think of wireless cards or centrinos - lots of non tech ppl with laptops would probably be polling away on flights

Yeah and I posted to that thread aswell LOL, I remeber posting something but I couldn't remember if it was on iPodlounge.com or here.

Anyway it's topical again what with the new article, if any mods want to amalgamate the two threads then please go ahead.

Well it's going to cost them. Before the end of the year I will be flying to and from American and Germany and there is no way that I'll go with Aer Lingus. I'd go mad without something like my Zen or GBA to distract me.

afaik The reason most consumer electronics are banned and laptops and pda's arent is because they have to meet (fcc?) electrical interference guidelines which consumer electronics dont.

Oh how I smile whilst playing games/mp3's/vid's on my pocketpc on aer lingus flights - whilst kids are going mental coz they cant use their GBA's :D

it is about time they fell in line with most other airlines tho...

But you'll have all those movies on demand and games in your in-seat entertainment system!

Oh wait, that's the other trans atlantic airlines... ;)

Aircraft transponders do operate in the same band as mobile phones, not at the same frequencies granted, but there is the potential for frequency spill. Very unlikely, but better safe than sorry.......

Yeah, consumer electronics would be unpredictable, even if they passed FCC regs when leaving the factory, after being drop kicked around for a year so might have different charecteristics.

Shame that the author of that article was more interested in a rant against the evil airlines than any investigation into whether phones do cause interference....

Any revenue that airlines might make from airphones (those planes that have them that is) is minimal to say the least.
