Price rises in O'Briens and Subway today

Right I normally get a large latte in O'Briens and a roll in Subway on my way into work - this morning the coffee price went up from 2.40 to 2.65, and the roll from 3.30 to 4.00.

I didn't say owt in either place but there's no way in hell I'm going back to Subway if they're going to be putting prices up by 25-30%. I know these are relatively small amounts but they do add up each week/month.

I submitted a complaint on the Subway website, will wait and see if anything is ever heard back.

Yep, I got hit for €2.70 for a large Mocha in O'Briens this morning. Up from €2.45 on Friday. A 10% price hike. Not acceptable.

Anyone know of alternatives in the Westmoreland St area?

Complain to the Competition Authority and the ODCA about the collusion betwen O Brien s and Subway in their price gouging activities. Funny how the rises all happened the same day .

Well that's the first mistake. Irish people don't complain enough.
If people don't tell them their price increases are a disgusting rip-off they will continue to do it.

Well I wasn't that bothered in O'Briens as they haven't put their prices up in about two years.

In Subway there was one Chinese guy working there, I'm certainly not going to complain to him because a) he doesn't set the prices and b) he doesn't give a fuck as he's really rude most of the time :)

The manager guy, who I do know a bit from chatting to him in there wasn't there, next time I'm passing if I see him in there I'm going in to complain.

Or if Subway come back to me saying they've all been sacked I'll go down and commiserate :)

At 9:30 this morning, coffee prices still hadn't changed in O'Briens on Dame St!

Are different outlets allowed charge different prices?

A large Mocha was still €2.45 in the Abbey St. O'Briens this morning (which is also on my walk to work) :)

    Bye bye Westmoreland St. branch!

I assume the price differential in O'Briens is something to do with the outlets being franchises?

Anybody who pays €7.00 for a roll and a cup of latte deserves to get screwed methinks. Sorry.:)

What ever happened to people making their own rolls or sandwiches and bringing them to work.

    We've only ourselves to blame.

Gotta agree with that, main reason the rip-offs are sustained is that people still pay up, mostly without even a hint of protest, as has been said many times before

Or a happy medium. My food on a typical working day: 2 slices of toast in the car, coffee and water at work, a small hot meal from the shop (€4.50 for a shepherd's pie, chicken curry, pasta, etc) and two pieces of fruit in the afternoon I brought from home

Prices in O'Briens in Abbey St were up this morning. Oh well, at least I got an extra 2 weeks at the old prices. But I'm not going back to Westmoreland St.

There was an article in the SUnday Times last Sunday about how dear Bewleys was and they had a guy from O'Briens say that they hadn't put up prices in over 2 years...

but the guy from O'Briens did say that they were undertaking a price review at the moment, as they hadn't changed their prices since the Euro

This snippet might be of interest to anyone who has poster here. BAckground: the Consumers Associatio of Ireland did a survey of Downtown Dublin coffee prices. They found Bewleys most expensive (€2.55), coffee generally overpriced and O'Briens the cheapest (€1.70 a medium cup of cappuccino or latte).
Of the seven cafe outlets surveyed in Dublin city centre, O’Brien’s was the cheapest. Brody Sweeney, the group’s managing director, said it was probably cheaper than other chains because it had not increased prices for more than two years.

The article is to be found at times.co.uk (search for coffee and O'Briens, it is date 18 April 2004).

I think that I read a similar article in the Independant as well yesterday

That's fair enough, however I still try to find the best value. And O'Briens on Bachelors Walk and in the IFSC (opposite the college) still haven't raised prices. The things I'll do to save 25c/day!

I assume you mean the one on North Earl Street by the Spire? I got them a couple of times but then stopped getting them. Not too sure why I got them in the first place but then why they stopped giving them to me. Odd.

the rolls in Dunnes on N earl st are great, you get loads on them, and its all freshly made, I prefer them to subway, even though you might have to Q a bit.
