    For some reason I never actually read the mplayer manual properly, but tonight I pretty much went through the whole thing and made a few small ajustments. like this

    /etc/mplayer.conf

    vo=gl
    ao=alsa9:default
    vm=no
    zoom=n
    double=yes
    monitoraspect=4:3
    monitor_hfreq = 31.5k-50k,64.3k
    monitor_vfreq = 40-150
    framedrop = no
    cache = 8192

    I notice that using the gl driver does two things, it seems to prevent the video from lagging behind the window when you are moving it, and also disable the blue overlay. This is also the same with x11, however with x11 I was unable to resize the movie. I also tried gl2 , but this makes the colors all wierd.

    Anyhow mplayer is so cool ( and so is -vo aa) , but there is something ive been wondering, If you set the overlay to lets say #000000 , which im sure you can do (although i havnt figured out how) and then got a console and set the background also to #000000 , and then played a movie with mplayer --rootwin -fs , would the movie show through the temninal, giving the effect or RT transparency?

    Any transperant terminal I've used just shows the background colours of the desktop and not those of the windows behind it.

    What kind of graphics card/driver combo do you use? Interesting that the GL works nicely for you. The Vidix driver is insanely fast on my rage mobility, but it's both unstable and only runable as root. I'm stuck with X11 with -zoom specified. Not very fast at all, my poor little 700Mhz thinkpad can't keep up. Not helped by having to use the esd driver either, which seems both inefficient and laggy.

    Transparent apps using Xfree just use the background image. I've yet to find an application that is able to do anything more than this and I doubt I will as Xfree86 doesn't support transparency - it's done by the apps themselves.

    yea, Ive been looking at directfb, but afaik it doesnt support my nvidia ti 4200. I think your right and RT tansparency is impossible. I guess well just have to wait for X11's replacement, still though, don't look too bad. (fluxbww)x - gentww)ww) plug)
