MMDS Mast

I cancelled my MMDS service over 2 years ago with NTL to get Sky Digital. Following repeated requests to NTL to remove the MMDS mast on the roof they ignored me and left it in place. Is this aerial good for anything considering I do not have the NTL digibox or sub.

    Chorus don't remove them either.
I had to take it down myself two years ago.
    Finders keepers apparently :D

As regards uses for it, seemingly if you have a wan internet service in your area and you subscribe it can be used as an aerial for that.

Thanks for the info Earthman. Could you elaborate on the "Wan Internet Service", I've not come across that before. It is possible to get broadband using such a service. Also if you know of a WAN Internet service provider in the Dublin area let me know.

Yes, I had to threaten them with leagal action before they took mine down.

Of course I now regret that because the mast would have been perfect for a connection to IrishWAN.

Not any in Dublin? :D There are loads in Dublin, as well as around the country.

Prisoner6409 - check out the link Earthman gave, you will find maps there and loads of links and contact details on how to get connected.

bkehoe down in New Ross is very knowledgeable on this subject and there is a board here mostly dedicated to this topic.

I'll move this thread over there and leave a copy here.

    Prisoner,

as far as i am aware the mmds mast is yours - you paid for it at installation. You could ring ntl on numerous occasions and get them to remove it - but in the long run you are better off to remove this yourself if you can.

It belongs to NTL / Chorus.

But if after a prolonged time they still haven't taken it, then they won't miss it.

Chorus used to leave them (costs money to take it down and customer might resubscribe), but they now remove them, probabily short of gear.

The dish is about 20dB gain and will work for WiFi or Video Senders on 2.4GHz. It is actually a 2.5Ghz dipole on it.

The dipole connects with fat N-Connector into a "Downconvertor" (like a Satellite LNB fed with cable instead of horn), which converts the 2.5Ghz to either VHF/Hyperband or some cases UHF to feed the set-top box. Like an LNB, it gets the 12V power up the TV coax. Unless you want to experiment with Amatuer TV (need licence) or Video Senders (no licence), the Downconvertor needs to be disconnected.

A video sender or WiFi "box" needs fitted inside a weatherproof plastic case with a N-Type socket fitted on it and tied to back of dish as the 2.4Ghz signal will "vanish" on more than a few feet of cable!

Some bigger MMDS dishes may do 24 to 26dB.

Dishes can be bought new in Kerry for about EUR 60, complete with dipole aerial and N-Connector cable tail. Downconvertors are expensive and sold elsewhere.
