Whatever you think about his movies...(they rock!!) i honestly think the guy makes top quality tv shows

CSI: Las Vegas and Miami and soon New York

Cold Case and Without A Trace, all great shows in my book.

He's certainly got a good knack lately, hasn't he? I imagine the networks are falling over themselves to get his program on their station.

I think the success of these shows relies on a few simple concepts:
    1) Some flashiness - CSI has the fancy whizz-bang reconstructions, Cold Case has the snazzy flashbacks, and Without A Trace does something similiar.
    2) Simple characters - There isn't really too much to any of the cast. They all generally gel well together and any viewer can readily get to know them from watching a few episodes.
    3) Single stories - You can watch it one week, miss it for four, return and have missed nothing all that important. Unlike say in the telefantasy genre, there's little week-to-week continuity (even Grissom's hearing loss this season is a pretty mild plot element when it does feature).

Add to that some decent storylines themselves and you've got a winning formula. Be interesting to see what angle the guy takes next.

The formula definitely works for the shows, though I don't really like the cast of CSI: Miami, so I don't watch that one.
I love the fancy gloss the shows have, it sets them apart from the more traditional crime shows out there. I couldn't be bothered with the Law & Order shows really, they're so set in their old-school ways. Don't like Criminal Intent at all, and SVU is too icky!
Without A Trace has had a few arcs incorporated into the standalone plots, but never anything too heavy for casual viewers. Enrique Murciano from Without A Trace is hot :D
The retro soundtrack in Cold Case is usually quite good too ;)
