Here are who I think are the most important and inspirational filmmakers of the last ten years.. Their films remain consistant throughout their careers and are influential to pop culture and other aspiring filmmakers..

Quentin Tarentino - Reservoir Dogs (1991)
    - Pulp Fiction (1994)
    - Jackie Brown (1997)
    - Kill Bill Vol. One & Two (2003)

    David Fincher - Alien 3 (1993)
    - Seven (1995)
    - Fight Club (1999)
    - Panic Room (2002)

Paul Thomas Anderson - Hard Eight (1996)
    - Boogie Nights (1998)
    - Magnolia (2000)
    - Punch Drunk Love (2002)

Some of the best in my opinion

    Steven Spielberg:
    Schindlers List
    Saving Private Ryan

    Peter Jackson:
    LotR trilogy

    Martin Scorcese:
    Gangs of New York
Goodfellas (I know thats made more than 10 years but it's one of his best ever movies)

    Steven Soderbergh:
    Erin Brockovich
    Oceans Eleven

    Sam Mendes:
    American Beauty
    Road to Perdition

Danny Boyle and Guy Ritchie for the way they changed the shape of Brittish film and indeed pop culture.

Darren Aronofsky (Pi and Requim for a dream) for his camera and visual stlye, Todd Solondz (welcome to the dollhouse, Happiness and Storytelling) and Alexander Payne (About Schmidt and Election) for there twisted and blackly comic look at everyday America.

    Kalina did.
I think Bryan Singer (Usual Suspects, X-Men) should get a mention too.

Plenty of great suggestions so far.

Suprised nobody has mentioned Spike Jonez yet.

Certainly The Coen Brothers, they've made some of the most interesting, beautiful, and enjoyable films of the last decade.
I just hope Barton Fink will find it's way to R2 DVD soon.

    Takeshi Kitano needs a mention.
    As does Terry Gilliam.
    And Hayao Miyazaki.

Cameron Crowe : Vanilla Sky and Almost Famous

If only that other Cameron would get off his butt and reboot the alien franchise.

    Spielberg is overrated imho.

I'd like to add another voice for PT Anderson, Fincher, Kubrick, Jackson, few of the others that were mentioned. Oh and Wes Anderson. I like his style of films, even though a lot of people might not agree (Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore).

I stick with Sam mendes as one of the best directors to have emerged in the 90s. Also have to agree with Elessar and add Frank Darabont to the list.
