So what's in your 'Subbed' forum list?

This isn't intended to be just a spammy "list out your subbed forums list". I would just like to find out which boards are particularly entertaining or informative - or at least entertaining or informative enough to warrant someone to actually subscribe to that particular board.

At the moment I have subscribed to 12 boards, which I check pretty regularly. There are perhaps a furthur 10 that I would visit on a regular-ish basis. I check the others once every blue moon or so.

    Subbed forums (In alpabetical order):

    After Hours:
Yes, this board. Full of inane ramblings just like this one, but you occasionally stumble onto some comedy goldmines.

    Feedback/Suggestions:
All the "FIGHT TEH POWAH!" style postings are here. Typical threads include "Why was I banned from X?" and "Forum suggestion: Obscure hobby #32". This board is also the soap opera of boards, the clashing personalities alone make it worth reading.

    For Sale General:
Yes, I am a for sale junkie. I think I've only bought one item from someone from boards in all my time here, but it's still nice to check up on what people are selling, and what the expected asking price is. It's always amusing when someone posts up something with a guideline price of ~€100 and gets offers of €5.

    Humanities:
This, after politics is the 'serious' discussion board. The controversial issues of the day are thrashed out here. Such issues as abortion, prostitution, divorce, racism etc crop up time and again. Moderated stongly by amp & co. ltd.

    Humour:
It's in my subbed list, but I hardly ever check it anymore. All the stuff that's doing the rounds in emails at the moment turns up here. Again, it occasionally has some class threads, but these are becoming increasingly few and far between

    IrelandOffline:
Find out why you should hate Eircom here. The nitty gritty of the state of the telecommunications industry of Ireland is discussed.

    Lan Parties:
I lan. Roll on the next Darkside.

    Lesbian Gay Bisexual:
How queer! What's this one doing here?

    Personal Issues:
Full of teenage angst. In other words, comedy goldmine. Such classic threads include "How do I know if she likes me?" and "Medical Problem: HELP!" as if we are all qualified doctors here.

    Politics:
If you have an argumentative temperment, stay away. If you do drag yourself over you'll find one of the busiest forums on boards. Politics is essentially a philosophy on how one should govern lives. I find it fascinating.

    Technology:
I just use this to keep abreast of more recent technological developments. Threads usually fit into either "Recommend me <Hardware component>" or "<Hardware component> failed". The former threads usually contain interesting information on emerging technologies.

    The Illuminati:
A private board. I could tell you more, but then I would have to kill you all.

Using the mouse, hover over your subbed list.

On you keyboard, hit the "Print Screen" button (may be "Prnt Scrn" or similar).

Run mspaint or other graphics program.

    Paste

    Trim to size

    Save

    Attach

put cursur over subbed tab at top, press 'print screen', open microsoft paint, edit - paste, drag a box around the subbed forums list, right click, cut, file - new, edit - paste, drag the bottom right corner of the image till it fits nicely around the subbed forums list, then save as jpeg, upload to file manager, right click on the file, copy shortcut, reply to this thread, hit the image button, right click - paste, hit ok, et voila

    not complicated at all

Why would you add forums like AH, Humour, PI to your subbed list?
They get so many posts that they'll always have new posts and that little * beside them. Why not just use the normal drop down menus.
I just have some of the smaller forums I'm interested in subbed, especially ones that are a bit hidden away, like file sharing, just so I can easily see if there's been any new posts since I last logged in.

How do you add forums to your subbed forum list?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Open the forum you want to add, and then click the Subscribe to this Forum link under the new thread icon on the top right.

I dont use subs, instead I scroll through pages of threads here-

and see what catches my eye.

After Hours : stopped reading it as much as i used to due to alot of it just being things redone over again, occasionally still post here though

East : incase anything happens in dublin that is of any intrest

Films : Im a self confessed dvd junkie and always willing to chat about films or read reviews on newly released ones

FS General : prowl around here looking to pick up anything of intrest (which mostly is either computer parts or games, also sold a fair few things on here aswell)

Games : im a gamer, i like to read about games..

Gigs/Events : Like to see whats up and coming here in dublin, dont read the ticketmaster site often and if anything of importance is coming up ive noticed it to be in here

Half Life : not very active atall, hopefully when hl2 comes out this will be an active board again, mostly read it for TFC stuff

Humanities : not read this in a while, think i put it there so i could follow up on the cigarettes ban/littering streets discussion, not contributed much afterwards

Humour : prowl this board in work to see if it can give me a few laughs while im sitting depressed in my crappy job

Mod : to see rants from unhappy mods ofcourse :)

Personal Issues : To remind me my life isnt as bad as it may seem sometimes, often just used as a cheering up factor, also give my advice if its of any relevance to me

Pix 'n' Mix : subbed it when it was first created and very active, dosent seem as active as it once was and im not in there much nowadays

Reaver : private tfc board, how i came about boards was due to this, havent played tfc in god knows how long but still talk on here to alot of the members

Soccer : if most of the rants by man utd v arsenal things keep continuing i will no doubt remove this board, everything that has been in there recently seems to sound like a broken record (in text form ofcourse..) some good posts and threads though so not all bad

Technology : always up for some computer talk, and had some good advice from people in here, and i always try to help people out with comp problems if i can

TV : i watch tele, so i dont mind discussing it..

Travel/Holidays : asked for some advice in here before is when i originally subbed it due to the sound advice that people offered me

V-TFC discussion : just to see whats happening in the world of tfc

Wanted : check it to see if i have anything that people are looking for and help out when i can, also managed to get a couple of items myself here by asking so subbed it out :)

i also use the bargains forum but keep meaning to sub it but dont... ahh well

After Hours- good mix of stuff in here, never anything too serious
Films- have to keep up to date with whats going on in the cinemas
LotR- the forum is a bit quiet now since all the films have been released but still plenty of good stuff
Motorsport- I'm a huge F1 fan and there are plenty of other F1 buffs on boards with loads of news and opinions
PearTree House- interesting place, you never know what's going to be said there
Personal Issues- sometimes humourous but occasionally interesting topics being discussed
Television- loads of 24 discussion going on here
    The Illuminati- as PearTree House

And when you put your mouse over one of the forums in your Subbed list it tells you the time of the last post and by who it was posted down at the left bottom corner of the screen. It was probably always like that though.

Actually, you used to be able to do that for every forum on boards. However it turned out to be very CPU intensive as each time someone posted the DHTML had to be regenerated for each user. Hence Regi initially got rid of this feature. It was reintroduced for the Subscribed forums list since this meant that there was significantly less CPU overhead than previously.

BTW, good idea ecksor with the subscribed forum/thread page.
