I use Lindows most of the time, and it's the best Linux OS I've seen yet. The Click-N-Run warehouse allows you to install 1000's of programs easily. CNR normally costs $50/year to use but if you sign up at http://www.choicepc.com for $100, you get Lindows for free and a lifetime membership to the CNR warehouse. It's a great bargain that I availed of immediately. LindowsOS 5.0 will be coming out in a few months and it promises to be their best release yet. If you're a CNR member, you'll get a free upgrade when it comes out.

My PCs run fine with it. The great thing is that when you buy it you get a family license. This means you can install it and run CNR legally on every PC you own, for that one price. Kinda handy if you want to use it on a few systems.

I have it on a dual-boot system with Windows XP, because there are still some things I need XP for (such as some games, Dreamweaver, etc.). I have subscribed to WineX and run some games such as Counter-Strike in Lindows. They run almost perfectly. I'm looking forward to playing UT2004 natively (no emulation) in Lindows when it comes out.

CNR is absolutely brilliant. I'm able to install lots of applications easily. It's much handier than the 'configure, make, make install' route. Of course, you'd really want to get broadband for it, as everything is downloaded via the net. Another great thing about CNR is that once you subscribe to it, you can get all new LindowsOS versions for free. That means that if you sign up at ChoicePC.com, you'll be entitled to use CNR and get all the latest versions of Lindows for that once-off fee of $100.

Speaking of latest versions, Lindows offer a one-click OS upgrade in CNR. When version 4.5 came out and I was running 4.0, I just clicked a button and it automatically downloaded lots of stuff and rebooted my PC. After rebooting I had the new version installed, and all my files and settings were still there. I have never seen something so easy in any OS.

I find the system very stable, but I'm sure there are some problems. The hardware detection system picks up most types of hardware, and every single piece in my system was picked up in the first boot.

If you need to ask any questions about Lindows, you can get lots of help in the Lindows forums. Go to http://forum.lindows.com and post in the Guest area. The forum regulars are very helpful and you might see me posting there as Darragh_IRL.

    Hope this helps!

sorry thought winex was like a program that would allow you to run windows programs not games!

is there something like that where you can run windows progs in linux

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Poz3D

WineX does run Windows programs as well as games. It's a branch of Wine that has special optimisations for gaming, but it still has most of the compatibility of Wine, and I have successfully got it to run a few simple Windows apps. You can get it at http://www.transgaming.org. You have to pay a $5/month subscription. This entitles you to all the latest releases, but once you get a version that works, you can just cancel your subscription and continue to use it. It's updated almost monthly.

You could use Wine, but it's messy to install and use. There is a version of Wine installed with LindowsOS 4.5, but it could be messy getting it to work perfectly. It's worth a shot though.

how about connecting to the net or setting up a new isp connection any problems?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43 newbiemodder

one last q is it like xp pro that you can have individual log in names and password for different users

    ta

I haven't tried connecting to the net with a modem because I have broadband. I've heard lots of success stories with people on 56k modems, though. It even has a video tutorial for setting it up.

You can set up multiple users like in XP if you want, but the login screen doesn't look as snazzy as XP's. It should be vastly improved in 5.0.

If you want to try out a trial version, you can find the LindowsLive CD shared on most P2P networks. This is a 'live' CD which allows you to try the OS by just booting it off the CD. No install needed! Don't worry, this CD is being shared 100% legally. I can't find the page on the Lindows site that talks about it, but trust me, Lindows are letting everyone give it away for free.

    hey poz

got work to buy me a sub to choicepc, and am trying to download lindows but damn cats keep pulling out broadband connection (great game for them!!!)

can you (dare i say) burn the iso and then install it on a number of pcs

shhh i did not say that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Poz3D

Once you download the ISO, you're entitled to install Lindows on as many PCs as you 'own'. That's the benefit of their family licensing. You can legally install that ISO on lots of PCs, assuming you own them all in some way.

own them in someway, hum what's the legal definition of that lol!

hey thanks for your help and will get back to you and tell you how it went

oh is the iso a self booting cd?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Poz3D

It sure is self-booting, and it installs the whole OS easily in less than 10 minutes. A bit different from XP!

thanks found that out but nearly deleted my main partition so i would have lost all my work!

will do it on a work computer!

    ta again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Poz3D

Sorry, I should've mentioned that you'll have to pick the Advanced Install option to install it alongside another OS. The problem is that the current version doesn't have any partitioning software in the GUI installer. You'll have to prepare the partitions before booting the CD.

no worries thanks for the advice!

did you order the t shirt?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Poz3D

No I didn't. When I signed up, the only option was for France. World wasn't available. I'm not particularly interested in a French t-shirt.

Lads i don't mean to be smart about lindows since i never used it but everything i've ever heard about it is that its almost as bad a security risk as windows is. Does it even tell u using root is stupid ?

i heard alot of bad things about it security wise but user friendly yes its meant to be good

can you give more details or pointers to articles that does sound interesting

actually looked at it myself and found

    http://www.phatvibez.net/reviews.php?ID=lindows4

    very interesting

It's not that big a problem at all. Windows runs all users as root by default. Lindows allows you to create other users easily, but it creates the default root user because it makes it alot easier for people to start using the system. There's a very good built-in firewall installed by default, so I don't find the root thing a problem. It's only a reason for hardcore Linux types to complain :D
