Wasn't sure myself but it's two different disk types. Apparenly the-R is lower quality than the +R. Most of todays dvd-r's can burn both.

DVD+ has a variable bit rate encoding whereas DVD- has constant bit rate encoding .
So therefore if you record a test card using DVD- you end up using a hell of a lot more disk space than DVD+.

Special Marker? i just use any old bog standard marker. It works fine, no need to splash out on super special markers.

I used normal markers to write on cheap ass PC line CD's and it destroyed them.

My friend gave me some CD-r's and asked me to burn 14 albums for him, I obliged but I forgot to write the name on them. So he decided to write the names on them himself with a BALLPOINT PEN, it was the funiest thing ever, he even wrote the tracklisting on the CD. I laughed hard that day. :D

On a second point, does anyone know where i could get dual layer DVD+R's

There aren't any burners available yet that will burn Dual Layer DVD's. Afaik, Sony have demo'ed a Dual layer burner at one of the trade shows but I think the earliest it'll be available will be early Q3.

first generation DVD+R dual layers aer coming out soon.
Philips looks like the first burner manufacturer to release a dual layer burner. Besides dual layer DVD+Rs, which can be burned at 2.4x, the drive writes DVD+R/W at 8x/4x. The drive, including Nero6, will retail for €169 in April. The drive is Philips' last single format burner, and even for this particular drive Philips will offer a DVD-R/W firmware upgrade in fall. In June, Philips will release the DVDRW1640K, which writes DVD+R at 16x, DVD-RW at 4x and dual layer DVD+Rs at 2.4x. It'll retail for €199 and will be the first drive from Philips to support DVD-R/W out of the box.

I'm waiting for that to come out before i get my burner

To the original poster, if you're making DVD copies to play in a normal player you should find out what that player can play. Not all can play both DVD- and DVD+ or either for that matter. Apart from that it doesn't matter what you use.

Hi guys - I didn't want to start a new thread cause it kinda fits into this one...

I want to buy a DVD burner and saw a bunch load arround on komplett.ie that look neat.

what sort of stuff do I need to look out for when I am comparing those... and why would I want to wait for the Sony one (which does wet my appetite
:) ) - will that play on my DVD player too (got a run of the mill Sony DVD player).

Thanks guys - and hope I'm not messing up the thread... jsut kinda looked right here..

For a dvd burner you just need a multi format one does + and - r's and rw's. And the fastest burner you can afford - I think some can do 8x now.

You need to double check on the web for the model of your sony player to find out what type of DVD R/RW's it reads. Looking on sony.co.uk it seems that all the new ones do both (+/-) except for the basic model which seems to only do the -R/RW

Also you will want some software like nero to do ya basic CD/data DVD burning, then some thing like DVD Xcopy, DVD Squeeze, DVD shrink, 1 click DVD copy to backup your dvd collection. www.afterdawn.com is a good dvd burner resource. I notice komplett are doing a special on the msi burner this week.

Some markers (the more permanent type) contain chemicals which can effectively eat away some materials - such as the silver layer on the top of discs.

    Back on topic, DVD-R/DVD+R differences

    It is what it's.
