    Picard. Kirk is... sleazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

i don't think kirk ever said those exact words either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭davej

Yes you're right The words "Beam me up Scotty" have never been spoken from what i've read.

Just like Sherlock Homes never said "Elementary my dear watson".

btw I was never really a fan of those tng Conan Doyle related episodes...

Same here and I didn't like the one with Mark Twain either. I found both characters annoying although the time travel and hologram escaping from holodeck stories were cool.

I also didn't like the way they often went to the "Ancient West" in the holodeck on TNG - why the obsession with the 19th century. They should have been more daring and picked more unusual times in history.

Back on topic, I never really liked the original series - although I'm glad it was made as it led to TNG. Kirk comes accross as a cheesy buffoon IMO. Meanwhile, Picard is educated in both literature and science, intelligent, classy, brave, commanding and so on - a real Renaissance man. An example: Remember the episode where he was kidnapped by Cardissians and they tortured him but still he refused to give in to their demands - that was very impressive. If I became a captain or a CEO or something like that, my leadership style would be influenced strongly by his.

I hated Kirk, the chauvinistic caveman. Picard like the previous poster said is a rennaissance man. I prefer Picard.

yeah but he was about to give in he really thought he could see that 1 extra or 1 less light, just made his big show at the end when he was being rescued

In all fairness to him he was being tortured for days if not weeks at that point he was told if he didn’t give the cardies what they wanted they would of used Crusher also that the enterprise-D was destroyed along with 1,000 of his crew then there was the added presser of 2-3 guards walking towards you as your being told "there coming to get you tell me now!! and you will live a good life"

And at the end he didn’t give in he might of though there was 5 lights but he never said it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

he would have caved, in his mind he saw 5 lights its not like he even would have thought he was lying

I didnt want to reply to this thread cause the first thing that came to mind was the ep in the simpsons where homer goes to college, but since the troll has been identified and removed I cast my vote for Worf.

    Worf???
The option was between Kirk and picard!!

I know but if nobody has any objections I'd like to widen the scope.

Granted you dont see Worf as captain that often, when worf serves in the Klingon civil war is he a captain?? I think he was, not sure, but if he was he did a great job. If he wasnt a captain well then he definitly showed his great tactical abilities in his role.

When Worf protects the cardassian convoy (trial episode) he made the tough decision, Kirk might have made it but Picard wouldnt. That showed brains and balls. A great combination!!

During the dominion war he was a captain for Martok and impresses him so much he is invited into his family.

In Star Trek:First contact he showes his stuff again.

He definitly is well suited to captaining Klingon ships and war ships (escort class) like the Defiant. However in that ep in TNG where they all lose their memories he really isnt suitable for the job. Hes a warrior, a fine tactical officer but for a Federation in peace time maybe he's not ideal.

As for the origional question of Kirk V Picard; as shown by Q Kirk is a young Picard. Picard is mature and sensible now but in his youth he was just like Kirk (in ToS).
Kirk however didnt become responsible enough with age (films), hence his colourfull disiplinary record. Theres a time for initiative and there is a time for taking orders or at least constructivly dismissing the orders like what Picard did in the first episode with ensign Ro or Data in the Romulan blockade not "To hell with you Im James Tiberious Kirk, you can kiss my ass" type stuff

How can anybody ever say Janeway was a good captain, she wrecked my head from the very first episode she appeared in!!

without doubt the best captain is Sisko!! But only after he grows the goatie and goes bald!! Then he kicks ass, bring on the dominion!!

But out of Picard or Kirk, it has to be Jean-Luc, --- "Make It So"!! Class! :D

The last episdoes of DS9 were memorable, nothing like 600 Fed ships vs 1200 Dominion and Cardassian ships.

he would have caved, in his mind he saw 5 lights its not like he even would have thought he was lying

I know but i thought that was good because it shows he's not superman - there's only so much anybody can take and he held out against it longer than most ppl
    would.

Nerd: "Sorry Simu, CEO of Microsoft, we really do want to use Linux"

Simu: "Damn you to hell... Bill, fire the torpedos!"

Well the thing about Picard is that he's always willing to hear innovative ideas and to learn about new things - he'd probably already know a fair bit about the open source movement because he's generally a well-informed man and he'd probably consider said nerd's proposal to use linux. And I'd be the same as a CEO!

Actually, given how often the Enterprise gets haxored, they must be using Microsoft's Enterprise edition:)

As for the troll, nobody cares! If people are posting here, they're obviously not ashamed of liking the show nor do I see any reason who one would be.

Oops, i just noticed you said CEO of Microsoft above - in that case, I don't think a guy with ethical standards as high as those of picard would take that job!

    neither.

Sisco was the best captain by far.

you put Sisco up against Picard or Kirk in qany situation and Sicko would prevail....but thats only me opinion....biased on the fact that DS9 was my fav star trek series
