To be honest, I liked Rap when it originally came along, because it at least had people who bothered to write lyrics to their songs, not like the latter day dance bull**** that existed before it. But the charts are totally swamped with it at the moment, and its destroying any credibility it once had.

It all depends on what sorta rap :) "pop rap" is terrible but theres loads of amazing hip hop out there , The Beastie Boys are great, as are outcast, the Sugar Hill Gang and De Le Soul.

    Very funny pic though :D

Where's the rock version: Number of whines cos your girlfriend dumped you
    Number of days unwashed
Number of times the same generic lines are to be looped into a 3minute song

TBH It's a retarded stereotype of rap music and these people who hate rap have never actually listened to any real rap

Dont take things too seriously Kold. Im a big rap fan and thought that link was hilarious first time I saw it. Sure, its satirising my music, but its undeniably funny nonetheless, and I wouldnt be suprised if the person who made is a rap fan themselves,or at least knows a fair amount about it. Its like those skanger caricature websites. While some people may say theyre the height of snobbery and were made by some D4 Trinity nobhead,in reality most of them appear to have been made by lads who are just the right side of skanger. Normal lads from Tallaght etc who decided to do a piss take of people they grew up with. People who are slightly like the people they portray. The truth is that these days too much rap consists of boring beats and generic lines. Sure, guns drugs violence and bitches have been rap staple for nearly 20 years now,but back a few years ago much of it was told in an intelligent, humourous manner. Nowadays its just some dickhead from the master P or roc a fella stable mumbling"I got guns and hoes, flash cars flash clothes,Im up here singin while my wrists are blingin"
Thats why Ive never liked Jay Z. Hes the ultimate stereotype rapper-an idiot who gets on the mic and mumbles non stop sh1t about three topics-selling crack, women, his own ego(including 25 mentions per song of the word HOVA or Hove),and how rich he is nowadays. He can barely do a line without mentioning cristal champagne for fcuk sake. This microsoft thingy is an exact parody of a Jay Z video/song.
Anyone who thinks Jay Z became the king of east coast rap after the legendary Biggie died needs to be kidnapped in the middle of the night by 3 armed men infront of their wife and children(or mothers and younger siblings),brought to a field in the middle of the culchieside and shot 3 times in the head.

And thats all i have to say about it

It's true, I mean people say rock can be generic? Just look at black music. That joke so sums it up. I really hate Dr. Dre, I mean he was innovative once but now he just rehashes the same **** over and over and complains if someone copies him. At least Eminem produces some original stuff and his messed up mind is reflected in his music.

NWA and De la soul are brilliant. everything else is crap.

One glance at just one of my playlists currently playing in my winamp window and i'll have to disagree with you:

    Jackson 5 - ABC
Aretha Franklin - Son Of a preacher Man - Respect
    Fontella Bass - Rescue Me
    Fugees - Ready or not
A tribe called Quest - Can I kick It (not as popular as the above)

Black Music Is too broad a term I think you mean chart topping Gansta Rap and whatever.

Naughty by natures 1st 2 albums.

    NWA's 1st 2 albums.

    Nas

    Dr Dre

    All classics.

It seems that their rap all got really boring once they got rich. Perhaps they needed something to bitch about to be good, or actually NEEDED to make good music before they all started driving "benzies".

Only good crowd at the mo are outkast (roots manuva's pretty good too)

Eminem? 50 cent? Ja Rule? Too rich to be interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭Kold

This is exactly what I'm talking about. People have retarded views on rap music because they can't understand it. it pisses me off when people hear that I listen to mostly rap music they automatically assume that I know nothing about music. I listen and appreciate a lot of music and I have to say that rap is the most expressive medium. What people don't realise is that rap is poetry which artists like Nas and Tupac etc to express true emotion. Then you get all these tards assuming you're all into your Jay-Z Bling bling, I drive around in my suped up Nissan Micra blaring 50 cent at top volume.

    It's ignorant ****.

rap back in the early 90s and late 80s was good cause it was about something, it was fighting the system it was powerfull stuff, N.W.A. ice cube, 2pac, nas, de la soul, run dmc etc.

rap that snoop dog, 50 cent and the rest come out with now is about bein a nigga in the hood with all my bling bling and bein a pimp keepin up an image not fightin for anything its pretty sad now, to see such a good method of getting across messages being used to keep up a crappy image.

must admitt tho some of em are gud eg. missy elliot, NERD, busta rhymes and a few others are still ok, wouldnt say eminem is brilliant but some of his stuff is good

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 353 ✭✭Kain

Yes i hate it. It's all crap.
Some artists (if they can even be called artists) are far to overrated i.e. Eminem

    No,
but i'm not a big fan of it either.

    Its music made by posers.

there are a good few great rap songs.
but i think its only a fad (thats lasted a couple of years i know), but its also sliding back to the back of the queue.

rock is back. yeah baby its back.

    Very much so!

Can't stand rap myself, but it's my own opinion and I feel no need to shove it down anybody else's throat. Just like I also don't feel the need to try to convince everybody how good metal/rock-based is. To me music's a personal thing, and I don't care if anybody tells me how shite a band/artist/"genre" that I like is, it's my music and I'll listen to it if I want to! As for turning people's stereotypes, well if the only thing they see is Jay Zed or whatever he's called, well it's kind of natural. Chances are if that kind of stuff doesn't remotely appeal to somebody (even just the music or rythym or whatever) it never well, and whether anybody's pontificating about [X] being the true essence of [insert pointless genre name here] music, I don't think they're going to convert any non-believers. Lots of people have gotten into music through bands that they came to think of as lame, but hey, it opened up the world to them, so it's not completely useless, is it?

Bitching about types of music is pointless as at the end of the day, I don't think anybody's gonna be going Oh-My-God,-they're-right-[rap/rock/pop]-is-actually-crap at the end of this thread. Live and let live.

    [Edit]And funny pic too :D

Last time i checked it was black blues guitarists who inspired rock 'n roll. Does rock suck?

Great pic tho, it really hit the nail on the head :D
Rap music stood for something at one time, bands like NWA who (even tho now seem kinda cliched with thier f*ck tha police schtick) were once a movement among black people in america as punk was to working class people in the 70's.

Now its become marketable, profitable, and a parody of itself. They just take any crack head out of 'da hood'. Give him a few million quid, claim that hes 'keeping it real', brag about how many times hes been shot, and hey presto, ANOTHER fastest selling album of all time. Yes 50 cent, im talking to you. :D

I used to like Rap back in the early 90's when it was good. Onyx were class, Cypress Hill were class and does anyone remember the House of Pain :D That was decent rap music, but the (c)rap we have nowadays isn't worth feck all. About the only rap song I like these days is that 'shut up' one by the black eyed peas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

    listen to the roots.

rap CAN be good, but the mtv rap "moguls" are just generic ****e. i.e. 50cent and ja rule.

Oh god i'd completely forgotten about ONYX till you mentioned it there. Cypress Hill and House of Pain are still two of my fav rap bands. HoP haven't been around for a while but I still prefer them over Cypress Hill.

    ONYX.....brings back memories.....

If you liked those groups why not check out Wu Tang Clan. They're like a modern version of some of the stuff they were doing back in the day..
