from what i gather, star independent is just a coincidental name:

    http://www.unison.ie/classifieds/printmediakit/
that link mentions the indo, sunday indo, and herald, but not anything else.... cant find who actually prints it though, not even on copies of the paper I have around the house.

its near the barcode cause i notice it when doing returns at work

nope, just checked and all it says around the barcode is 'The Irish Indepedent' and in really really small print 'the recommended retail of this paper in Ireland...blah blah'

looked through a few copies too.... it must be somewhere, but i cant see it on the front/back pages, or inside them..... do they put all their credits in the centre of the paper or something?

The Star has no affiliation with the Indo. They're owned by Star Independent Group alright but thats a seperate company than the Irish Independent group

I always thought the star was irish rather than the Oirish Sun..... maybe Im wrong..

anyway, Star Independent is different to the independent as James R said

actually the star, herald, indo, sunday world are all owned by the same company - Independent News and Media PLC.

    Taken from their website

"Ireland is the headquarters of the Independent News & Media Group where it publishes national and local newspapers, operates the largest newspaper wholesaler and distributor, as well as operating a fast growing yellow page director business.

    Publishing
Independent Newspapers (Ireland) Ltd is the leading newspaper publisher in Ireland, with the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent, Evening Herald, Sunday World and The Star all market leaders in their segments. In addition to the five national titles, the Group publishes eleven local newspapers in counties Cork, Kerry, Dublin, Louth, Wexford and Wicklow."

Yup, talla beat me to it.

The Indo actually own 50% of the Star, while the other half IIRC is owned by a British/Irish collaboration. It is an "Irish" publication which the Brits have absolutely zero control over, as opposed to an 'Oirish' publication.

Easiest way to spot a cheap Brit tabloid is look at the top centre of each page of the Sun/Mirror whatever if there is a code like I, R, or E and then a digit, those pages are produced in the Republic. One edition generally consists of less than 5% Irish input.

As for the stars, presumably they're supposed to be dropped from the main paper on saturday and sunday because of the free mag (which I presume you were referring to).
