Overclocking advice

Hey I posted this in another thread but it's a new topic really and I wasn't getting many replies. So here we go.

Ok turned off Hyper Threading and got 18160. Overclocked the c.p.u to 3.6ghz(225mhzx16) without changing the core voltage and got 19556.

In 2003 I got 6563. That was with HT turned on. I have to run it again with it turned off and then again with it overclocked to 3.6.

Ran SiSoft Sandra but I didn't document the scores. Just been busy with college this week. I will do a full set of benchmarks at stock speeds and overclocked speeds this weekend.

Ok to achieve a higher overclock I'm going to have to up the voltage. Can anyone tell me safe levels for core voltages for c.p.u and RAM. I should be able to get to 4ghz with a higher voltage.

Just having a slight problem at the moment. On startup my RAM is identified as 400mhz.(200x2) It is in fact 500mhz. Now I don't know if this is just an error as my memory scores are very high or whether it is running at 400mhz.

I can't change the memory in my bios only through the fsb. Maybe I should update the bios and up it to 500mhz. My overclock to 3.6 meant the RAM was running at either 450mhz or 550mhz. This RAM overclocks well but 550 would be the very top limit. It's GEIL pc4000 platinum RAM. Any ideas?

Other than that I'm happy with the performance. It's running perfectly now.

I'm keeping it running at stock speeds. Theres no need to overclock yet. I can run any game with full detail @1600x1200@100hz and the frame rates are still excellent.

Found X2's game benchmark with full detail really pushed it but the frame rates were still respectable.

Also I have my RAID set up to transfer information in 64k/b blocks. It allows anything from 8k/b to 128k/b. Does anyone know which is the fastest?

Lastly I want to overclock the graphics card by about 10-20%. It's a Sapphire 9800XT. Appartantly a 10-20% overclock is no problem I just need a program to do it. Tried Powerstrip but it was reading my core as 59mhz and my RAM as 59mhz. It's not reading it correctly at all. Can anyone recomend another program for this?

    Cheers

    BloodBath

    Bloodbath,
Could you post your system specs, cpu/ram/mobo?

Have you tested 225fsb for stability with prime95? It's a good idea to run prime after each o/c so you'll know when you're approaching the cpu limits. Just let it complete the first pass (7 tests) and then up the fsb again. When it's near it's limit, prime will fail during the first pass. When it fails, raise the vcore by 0.025v and try prime again. Keep raising vcore until it passes or vcore is too high (cpu air limit reached)

    Ram speed:
You can change the ram speed by altering the CPU/SDRAM divider. At stock speed 200Mhz, a 4:5 divider will run PC4000 at 500Mhz (200:250x2). When you raise fsb, your mobo will probably switch to 1:1 (200x2). The speed shown in BIOS is the speed your mobo is running the ram at (not the ram's rated speed) so don't worry if it says 400Mhz, just change the divider.
recommended vdimm varies with manufacturer, do you know what chips your ram uses? Most ram can handle more than the mobos max setting, mine is at 2.85v but I'll be raising it to 3.0/3.2v when I get a pot.

At 1:1, you won't be stressing your ram, so default vdimm should be ok.

vcore limits vary too. I haven't gone over 1.65v with any P4 on air, but some people go to 1.75v or higher.

I'd estimate your cpu will max out around 238fsb (3.8Ghz) with stock cooling (if it's a good chip). If you want 4Ghz, you'll need a vapochill or prommie to cool it.

About fsbs, here's my rough guide of what to expect from average P4s with stock cooling:

    CPU FSB
    2.4 285
    2.6 265
    2.8 250
    3.0 242
    3.2 234
    3.4 225

From another review of the P4 3.2c:
"you must keep in mind that a store-bought 3.2 C Pentium 4 may not overclock as well as our sample did, simply because the multiplier of the 3.2 C is too high to allow for FSB's over 230-240 MHZ when using conventional cooling methods."
