    Try using IsoBuster (www.isobuster.com).

It's great for recovering files from damaged CD's, but I don't know if this is the problem here or not.

what is the exact message? And have you tried making an image of the CD using Nero or whatever, and then mounting that imge and reading off that.

it a 716mb avi file i burn onto cd a few weeks ago, the original of which was deleted, i have since bought a dvd writer and want to convert the avi file to dvd, but when i try and drag and drop the movie off the cd onto my hd so i can work on it, it starts to copy it off the cd, but when its at about 90% of the file taken off the cd it stops and normaly tells me "invalid ms-dos function", althought my other pc is currently saying "data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

will try that software now, but if any1 else can help in the mean time, cheers

ok, isobuster wont do it, tried using cloneCD to copy and its saying there is a load sectors it cant read, but how come i can watch the whole movie off the CD?

Ok, there is bad sectors on the disk, but i know they dont effect the video thats on it as i have watch the movie, so i tried using ISO buster telling it to ignore any bad sectors, but when it gets to them (at around 80% of read) and i tell it to ignore them, it just freezes?

are you using the same drive to copy the cd that u burned it with ??? this happens me sometimes when i burn a cd at a m8's house, plays fine on mine but gives me crc's if i try to copy it, try a different drive if u can.

edit : as a matter of interest did u overburn the cd, u say the file is 716mb??????

I have tried it on both the lg cdrom i burnt it with and with my new lg dvd burner,

i realy cant remember if i overburned, but if it 716mb, then i assume i did.

i just cant figure out how i can watch the whole movie, yet not copy it off the friggin cd

overburning can cause crcs and bad sectors towards the end of a cd as it burns back across the cd, causing the problem u describe, u could always try another pc

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Try this: open a cmd window, open taskmanager and kill explorer.exe. Then in the cmd window, copy the file from the cd drive to your harddisk - it's worked for me :)

    no joy, but thanks anyway.

i tried to convert the movie straight off the cd, but it got as far as the bad sectors and stopped encoding.

will figure it out sooner or l8r, but again any help is appreciated. will try practical anything!

Ok, i have an easy (but time consuming) way of recovering 99% of that avi.

Firstly, the disc is corrupted, so you can;t just copy the file off.

    1) Download Virtualdubmod from www.sourceforge.net

    2)Open the file inside virtualdubmod.

    3) Click on the Video tab, and select "Direct Stream Copy"

    4) Click on the Video tab again, and use the "Scan video stream for errors" button. When it finds errors, use the "delete bad frames" button. This won't actually delete them, but when you try and save the video on your HD (using File-Save as) it will skip over the corrupt parts.

Alternatively, just click on File-Save As, and when it pops up an error when saving, just note what frame number it is, and manually cut that out, and keep cutting out frame by frame until it works.

I had to the the second method one time, it took about 15 minutes, but it worked in the end.

this is starting to annoy me :p

If you can watch the movie, can't you just open it in an avi player and then save it on your HD?

    did you try virtualdubmod?

And if its a codec problem, did you download the correct codec so you can open that type of movie?

Also try gently cleaning the cd... no-one has said that yet.

i tried virtualdub and it said somehting about not support this type of compression, its an xvid avi,

i already have the proper codecs, cause i can open and watch the entire movie of the cd.

and i tried both cleaing and repair kits on it yesterday :(

isobuster was left running over nite and managed to copy the file off the cd excluding bad sectors, but open off the hd :(

you must be doing something wing if virtualdubmod can't open that Xvid. i have ripped loads of stuff to XviD, and Virtualdubmod is my program of choice for doing it.

Hopefully ISOBuster fixed it up for ya, but i'm amazed virtualdubmo didnt work, its practically built for Xvid importing/encoding/exporting

NOTE: virtualdub and virtualdubmod are not the same program

if you have Nero installed run the (its not here in front of me, but from memory) DVD / CD speed test program. go to Extra menu at the top and run scandisc. tick the surface scan box and click start. If you get red boxes, then the data is rather unlikely to be recoverable.

As others have said, it's probably the overburn that's causing the problem.

When the file is being copied, the integrity of the file is checked towards the end. The CRC error indicates that there are parts of the file missing or corrupted.

The binary data for most of the disk is ok, so a lot of players will play it no problem (for all intents and purposes, they don't check the integrity of the data before playing). Maybe if you could determine the time at which the error occurs, you could rip and encode the video up to that point....

finaly got virtualdub to rip to and around the section of disc thats damaged, encoding it now to see how it looks.

    thanks for all the help
